No way that team should have lost a game! Think about this, how crazy would it have been to have won the NC that year also. We would be back to back to back to back National Champions! That's crazy!! I honestly feel we are in the greatest dynasty that college football has ever known. I think if our O line can gel we will do something that has never been done and that's Three in a row! Man I love Alabama!!!
The defense, at least statistically, was rather good (5th in ppg, 6th in total yards).
I've always felt like it was the offense loaded with veteran studs that let us down in the games against LSU and AU. You weren't going to stop AU from scoring points, but we had way too many weapons not to score 30+ in that game.
Not saying they were bad but the perception was that the untimely big plays surrendered by the D cost us big and I was just thinking about how insanely stacked our team was. Would you agree the 2010 d was not as good as 2009, 2011 and 2012?
We needed better corner play. Dee was young and got beat several times in those three games. I truly believe that if Kareem had stayed, we would've just won four in a row. I know "if". Lol
Very talented, but 10 of those guys were starting for the first time that year. It is really a testiment to their talent that they did as well as they did with that little experience coming back that year.
I do agree with that, but you are comparing 2010 with 3 units that were all ranked the best in the country. Just because 10 new starters didn't meet that standard doesn't mean they were a disappointment.
Offensive line play in 2010 was the biggest problem IMO
Yep it slowed down the running game enough. To make us go to the air more than Saban probably wanted to with Ingram & Trent carrying the ball. We also gave up a lot of sacks as well.

Pass protection was horrible at times too.
Pass protection, specifically up the middle. Vlachos had a terrible senior season as Nevis, the 2 DTs from USCe, and Fairley abused him and Jones/Steen all year.
We also had a lot of crippling injuries. Injuries that let our players play, but they were all about 70%. Barron getting injured killed our hopes against AU. Trent Richardson getting injured killed our running game chances against LSU. Barrett Jones not playing against Fairley was HUGE. McElroy, Ingram, Dareus, Upshaw, Hightower were all injured at some point that year. If Upshaw had been the guy he was the last 2 games of the year, we beat LSU and Garcia doesn't have his Tom Brady game.
This conversation comes up about once a week - and I agree with this the most. That team was very talented, but not a lot of veterans on the team aside from GMAC and MI. The defense was loaded with first time starters and was plagued by injuries all year. Dareus missed virtually 3/4 the season and was only about 90% against AU and finally 100% against MSU. Upshaw was hurt all year. Hightower was recovering and not yet in his normal form. MI got hurt before the season started. Trent was hurt late. Julio had a few nagging injuries all year. AND - our OLine was in reload mode and not real strong when it had to be. We couldnt convert 3rd downs in close games, late and our redzone scoring was miserable too.
The team that played in January was a NC caliber team. The team that played in the second half at BD in late Nov was not.
Chapman was a 5th round pick....Menzie was a 5th rounder...Lester will be lucky to be drafted.
That year, IMO, all comes down to the offense going stagnant against LSU. The USC loss was unavoidable when you think about the stretch we were on and how perfectly USC played all day. We were coming off an emotional comeback at Arky and an emotional beatdown of Florida. It had all the makings of a trap game.
Garcia had the game of his career and was making amazing throws despite very good coverage. Just one of those days when things lined up against us and it wasn't our day.
But the LSU game was winnable and could've saved the season. Got a lead and sort of went in the tank, and just couldn't move the ball in the 2nd Half. Sort of like this year's game, actually.
When you think about it - winning the LSU game may have propelled us into the NC game, because I don't think there's any way at all we lose to AU if we've got 1 loss and a shot at Atlanta heading into it. We find a way to finish that game if there's something big on the line - totally changes the dynamic. We should've won anyways.
Edited my post. Thanks.
I was more thinking potential than anything. It's still insane that 9-10 guys get drafted off that defense and 5 possibly 6 first rounders.
It was a problem no doubt but had the defense not blown coverages against LSU and the barn then we win those games. We got outplayed in nearly every facet against USCe.
We ran the ball pretty well against Lsux when we tried and against the barn in the first half. The OL did have issues but IMO 2 of the 3 losses were primarily due to the blown coverages in the secondary. Oh and also a drunk QB having his career game against us.
2010 D was not the best. You cant base it on how good the guys were when they left. In that season they were not the best we've had. Blown 24 point lead is inexcusable in IB. Garcia over the top to Jeffrey all day was inexcusable.
