good post; something has to change, maybe even several "somethings"; we can't continue to do the same things and expect significantly improved results. Ask a simple question: What would Nick do?
This is a great post. There is nothing wrong with the offensive sets we run. It is the same as a lot of other teams. We get a lot of open looks and we would get that many more with a big man down low to demand attention.
The only big problems I see on offense are pace of play and ability to set screens. I really think Grant's philosophy right now is to win the "points per possession" battle. Where I think this was the right way to play for the last 2 teams we have had, this team would do much better to increase the number of possessions per game because we are so guard oriented. We play so much better offensively when we push the ball and take the first open look early in the shot clock.
Also, our kids don't know how to set screens. Watch Ole Miss and Florida set screens. They know how to move right at the last second and they set an effective screen without getting called for a foul. Our guys are poorly coached in setting screens.
I love coach Grant. Definitely think he is the right man. If he can turn up his recruiting he is going to have big time success at Alabama. Just need to tweak a few things.
No disrespect,,, But your question is an example of the mode of thinking that keeps Bama basketball fan base from "appearing" to have a really smart basketball fan base..
But I am sure Duke fans are asking the same question "what would Coach K do", when they are discussing Cutcliffe.
I can see that... good points.. and great point about the last 2 teams
I am a little shaky about the pace,,,I am not confident that speeding up the game will help, with Bama's shooters,,, almost lost to Mississippi State, when the offensive sets were sped up.
I'm a UNC grad, not Duke. In any event good coaching, management and leadership skills are not necessarily the exclusive property of any particular sport.
Great points. Let me ask you a question. Some of my friends work closely with high school athletics. They have had an opportunity to see Grant's assistants in action on the recruiting trail. I have heard that they struggle on the recruiting trail often getting outworked by rival coaches. Have you heard the same?
Retin would be much farther along in his development had he played more early in the season. You can tell that he gets too agressive at times which causes him to turn the ball over. He is still learning the game. However, the guy is an unbelievable athlete with tremendous upside. Problem for him will be what position does he play going forward. I like him at the two but he is small. He was brought here to run the point but it looks like he can't handle the ball well enough to play the position. I hope Grant can find a point guard in the late signing period or else there is some trouble on the horizon.
Pujol is the only coach I've hear about or seen out recruiting (besides Grant). But I haven't been around many major high D1 prospect in a few years... The feel is that Grant is the best recruiter on staff.
Yeah, but the problem is a HC doesn't have time to be the lead recruiter, the HC needs to be the closer, not the lead recruiter. If Grant is having to do that he seriously needs to fire an asst coach and get someone in that will take that load off of him.
But I don't know one way or the other, I have no idea if Grant is spending to much time recruiting and that is taking away from his other responsibilities. I just have seen many different posters claim they have knowledge that Grant's asst coaches don't do a good job recruiting.
Although it is a common problem in management for a young manager having trouble letting someone else do a job the manager is better at then the employee so that the manager has enough time to do all of the other high level responsibilites. Maybe that is a trap Grant accidentally fell into.
