This thread is about Verne and Gary ---- especially Verne. They receive a lot of grief from fans on our board and probably other boards in the network as well.
""I come here not to bury Verne but to Praise him."
Verne, I cannot disagree with my fellow BAMA friends that your tenure is on shaky ground. There is no question that doing play-by-play is a skill that very few have. Its also true, Verne, that your skill at that task is ---- shall we say --- slowing down a bit. We notice the botched names or the hesitation or the missed down and distance mark. We see and feel the struggle. And with that know-it-all smartass - Gary sitting beside you ----- well ---- that would get on anyone's nerves and force a few mistakes along the way too.
But this fan is going to give you a pass for a while. Why so?
Verne Lundquist was born July 17, 1940 (he is now 72)
He graduated from Texas Lutheran University
He is now approaching 50 years in sports broadcasting with some very impressive gigs
Yes he has been making mistakes but they have been more funny than damaging. He always calls the game straight up and fair and most of us can't tell which team he may like more ---- can't say the same about Gary......
There is no way that any of us can't see clearly that he loves what he does for a living -- he wants to make a contribution and enjoys being a part of a sport you and I obsess over.
I remember when I took over a company 15 years ago --- we had a Verne in the company --- however her name was Phyllis. I was told she was making to many mistakes, that she was too old and that we need to fire and replace her with someone more capable. I am no pansy-ass business man but I decided to give her and everyone a 30 day look before making any decisions. Most of what was told to me was correct. But for some reason - I did not fire her. I learned she had been with that company for 30 years and had been dependable ---- not the best --- but dependable ---- so over time I slowly modified her skills where her knowledge and wisdom could help the younger people. I hard but valuable lesson learned for me.
Back to Verne. Why is he still there? Everyone sees the mistakes, everyone can tell when he is off a bit and everyone knows that there are other play-by-play people that are probably technically more proficient and available.
But this is his time ---- he learned it and earned it. It actually adds some flavor to it even with the mistakes being made.
I would ask that we cut Old Verne a little slack and understand that we, too, are approaching that time and will want the respect that he should be getting now.
And Hey!!! The mistakes and mess-ups etc ---- are actually kind of funny.
His heart and soul is in the right place ------ Lets think about being cool. With the Internet -- maybe someone can make him a celebrity as he exits his career down the road.
Down Vote away......... :)
Nothing personal, but I always down vote any preemptive measures by posters to protect against down votes. Just not a fan of the practice.
But I do actually like Verne and Gary.
Down vote for the novel.
I always want to whistle the Andy Griffith theme song when Verne talks. Both seem like good peeps.
I don't mind them especially if the alternative is Tim Brando.
I like Verne and Gary, but to each his own.
Me too. Sorry OP but I only skimmed the wall of text. Something about some old lady you wanted to fire?
Anyway they're not that bad but people love to bitch. They whine about Verne and Gary but it doesn't matter because they hate everyone else too. There's not one announcer or media member you'd get more than 10% of BOL to admit liking. Easier to just bitch about everything.
And yes I'm aware of the irony of my bitching about bitching. See what I mean? People can't help themselves.
I always downvote people that are so fast and hasty to downvote people but I actually upvoted you because you gave and explanation.
Folks asking about pics so 1. Near Skagway AK 2. Ketchikan AK 3. Space Needle in Seattle. This summer was a great trip.
I will take them over Brando or Mussberger any day.
YES! I love me some Verne! He's quite endearing, warts and all...
1960 Les Paul
Too long, didn't read
Look man, obviously he is not performing to a high standard. His job requires a high standard.
I wish Verne did not have all the mistakes he has had. He earned the job he has.
Nostalgia only goes so far.
After he called Chizik "Jim" yesterday, well that washed his sins away with me LOL
+1 for the Julius Caesar reference. You get another +1 if you say who said it.
Who is Brutus???
CBS is more to blame then Vern is. They're apparently deciding he gets to leave on his own terms, whenever that may be. This is why I feel ESPN generally makes the right call in changing up the booth lineups a lot, and not letting things become too nostalgically familiar.
NNNNNTTT...nice try, thanks for playing. Plus one to you anyway for knowing one of the characters.
Hint...OP pulled a slight switcheroo...the original quote is "I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him."

Who is Cicero??
I kinda like them too. I do miss Keith Jackson...he reminded me of Alabama football on national tv.
Strike two. Another plus one for knowing another character. But I'm not giving you plus ones for naming every other character in the cast and then giving me the right one at the end.
Hint: Brutus gave him permission to speak at Caesar;s funeral as long as he spoke no ill of the conspirators, and yet he was still able to turn the crowd against them. "Brutus is an honorable man. So are they all honorable men."
Well that's easy but I don't know the quote....
Who is Mark Anthony
And we have a winner!
I have no problem with vern n Gary.
I have a problem with children starving. We have the ability to change things, but we will do and be what we will do and be.
