That's the kind of big man I've wanted on this team all season. I've had to listen to my dad all season long about him (though, to his credit, he's been a gracious victor). 7'1", 250lbs, and not afraid at all to get physical under the basket and drive to the hoop. And on defense, he puts his body in the way and makes guys work around him. Though I loved when (I forget who it was) got in his face on offense and pushed him around, that was golden. And Releford stepped up and acted like he wasn't afraid of the big guy. But, at the end of the day, that's the kind of physical, big playmaker you want in the paint. So who do we have coming in or on the horizon to fit that bill?
No one even close to the same level
taylor is smaller and nowhere remotely close to as effective on offense
hale is much smaller
There are less than 10 guys at the college level that fit your description.
Exactly...my heavens, name a team in college basketball that wouldn't want this kid.
Exactly. Fans continually comment on how we need a dominant big man. No kidding. So do most of the programs in the country. Unless you are a basketball elite or the kid grew up in your state or is a legacy, there is very little chance of snagging one (and even those last two just get you listed as one of the teams being considered)
Personally I think the method of getting some athletic foreign national big guys is probably our best path. Right now it hasn't paid off but still think for our program in this recruiting age, it is the best approach.
Unfortunately you are right. Tha main thing that keeps the elite programs elite is that they get the big men and others can't match up. They have a go to when shooting is cold or they are able to shut down the paint and keep a rebounding edge.
Getting the foreign guy worked out better for Maryland than us so far. I still think Gueye helps and Engstrom seemed to be better early before the injury. They will make us really big once the incoming guys get on campus. They do need to keep improving.
Effective legitimate big men are hard to find and even harder to get on campus. If they ever go to the 3 year on campus rule, it will help spread these guys out and make the college and pro game much better, IMO.
Thank you. Almost every team in the country needs a guy like him.
