The play was for Lacey, who is exactly who should get the ball on the last play. Tennessee played tough defense on the play, and their guys had great position on Cooper, holding him up for an extra couple seconds when he went to get the ball from Steele. Even though Steele was pretending to look down low, he knew all along he was passing to Cooper to ultimately get the ball to Lacey. If Lacey gets the ball a couple seconds earlier as intended, he could have had the option to either shoot or drive. Even with limited time, he did a great job getting his guy in the air and drawing a foul.
Grant excels as an in-game coach, and his players are fundamentally sound on both ends of the court. He has recruited very well (considering our circumstances and fan support) at guard and wing. He has missed on a couple posts, and I think he did a poor job filling up our roster with a couple more bigs. When you only have 13 spots, you have to figure out a way to manage the roster better. That said, I am very happy with Grant and think he will learn from his recruiting mistakes. Anyone who watched our game against UK this week could tell that one team was significantly better coached than the other.
Excels with the defense? Absolutely. With the offense? No not in year 1,2,3, or 4.
Cooper was on the bench during the last play. Releford gave it to Steele right at mid court and cut through and just got out of the way. Steele then held it for 3 or 4 seconds till Lacey got open because Jacobs did a terrible job screening the play.
If we knew who we wanted to get the shot we should have gotten him the ball to start with at the top of the key and let him make a play like the TAMU and SDSU games. Or at least leave Cooper in the game and bring him up to screen and if Lacey doesn't have it let him pick and pop to Cooper at the top of the key for the shot. The play had disaster written all over it when we took the ball out of Releford's hand and tried to off ball screen. Takes too much time when we don't excel at a play like that.
