And we won like 96-50? Those were good times.
I've never seen an offensive explosion like that 1st half.
Do you remember when we had Kenny walker and Erwin Dudley...two big men that could rebound, defend, and score on the same team.
I believe we chanted "Powers sucks" (clap clap clapclapclap)
We then proceeded to get housed by them at the hump I believe
We ran one play. Big guy sets up under goal, Shelton runs off one way or the other, catches ball in corner, drains 3 in State's face. Rinse, repeat.
Then that goofy white kid turd slammed one of our guys to the ground and got yelled at for the last 8 minutes of the game. Man.......that was fun.
YES! POWERS! Good memory sir!
Oh of course we did, a Gottfried tradition.
I also remember Shelton ripping up Arky in Coleman and Arkys coach getting in a verbal confrontation with Dudley..I thought that was as sorry as you get as a respected coach.....RTR
I also remember Ron Steele doing this to Lee Humphrey
Speaking of how someone ripped up State, do you guys remember what Kennedy Winston always did to them at the Hump? Kennedy was a great player, but he was like a shark seeing blood when he saw State at the Hump. During his last season, Alabama had to win in StarkVegas to get into the NCAA tournament. For most of the second half, the only "play" Gottfried called was a series of isolations for Winston. He lit State up. He is still one of the best basketball players I have ever seen in person. He also had one of the nastiest recruitments I have ever witnessed as well. You are right, those were good times.
That game was the most out of leftfield game I've ever watched. That team was a bunch of underachieving dogs, and then all of a sudden on Sunday afternoon in Starkville they figured it out.
Yep........he was a great player. It's a shame he left early. Gottfried had a lot of those guys. Wallace (who ended up being ok after 3-4 years of development in the NBA), Grizzard, Cotton, Winston, Davidson.
The stars aligned for that team. They went on like a 10 game winning streak just to make the tournament. Once they got into the NCAA tournament, the rest was history. They got absolutely perfect match ups all the way to the elite eight. We even got the perfect ripe to be beaten 2 seed Stanford. However, that dream came to a crashing halt when we ran into UCONN. Still a good run. Very proud of what that team accomplished.
That UConn team was one of the best teams of the last 20 years. They played 1 close game the entire tournament. Ben Gordon, Okafor, Villanueva, Hilton Armstrong, Josh Boone, Marcus Williams, Denham Brown....................man. What a roster.
Vermont - W by 17
Depaul - W by 17
Vandy - Win by 20
Bama - W by 16
Duke - W by 1
Georgia Tech - W by 9
That is incredible
That team was loaded. I think everybody knew that Alabama was going to get beat pretty bad. That team featured at least five pros. Also, Ben Gordon was unstoppable in college.
We actually won in Starkville that year.
Yep, we did, that was actually the UW-Milwaukee year. We got blown out at Vandy and blown out at Florida that year and lost at home to Kentucky because that little doucher Patrick Sparks went crazy.
Then we got blown out by Bruce Pearl in the NCAA Tournament first round.
The 04 State performance at Coleman will never be repeated by an Alabama team. We beat them by 50 at home, then got a big road win at the hump in the season finale. That Gottfried team underachieved so much it wasn't even funny. We had so much talent, and ended up just being a 5 seed, before eventually being the 5 12 upset by losing to UW Milwaukee. The coach of that team was none other than Bruce Pearl. The 04 Alabama team should have been better than a 5 seed anyway. That 04 State game I will never forget. We could of beat the 98 Bulls that night. The SEC was so much better back then. The conference always received 7-8 bids on a yearly basis.
