The University of Arkansas on Sunday evening announced it hired Randy Shannon as its new linebackers coach. He leaves TCU after one season under the same title.
Shannon, the Hurricanes head coach from 2007-10, joins former Miami receivers coach George McDonald on Bret Bielema's first staff in Fayetteville.
Christopher Walsh covers Alabama football for BamaOnline, 247Sports, and is the author of 18 books.
That's a good hire. Didn't he burn some bridges in Florida though while at the U, if so I don't see him hitting Florida because I know bilema like having Florida skill players.
Interesting move. Now that TCU is in the Big 12 it's not like he was at a tiny school and TCU has had a solid if not very good defense for several years now.
Pretty good hire. I thought that Jimbo Fisher was going to hire him as his defensive coordinator. He will definitely help Bielema recruit Florida.
he was a great d cord
Roll Tide to Her
You guys are completely clueless on this one....with all due respect.
Shannon was a DISASTER of a DC at Miami. See the Halloween 2004 gashing against a 5-5 Unc squad. He literally never made adjustments.
And yes he burned recruiting bridges after his "2008" class that was a flop. He notified Booker T, Miami Central and Northwestern, (cane strongholds!) that if those players were to play at Miami, they would have to prove they wanted to be a Cane. And that lead to him not showing up for 1! Single visit to those schools. Example: teddy Bridgewater signed to Louisville after decommitting from Miami, and said that Shannon was acting like Teddy should be thankful he has an offer etc. every high school coach was baffled when Shannon wouldn't return their phone calls.
Bottom line, obviously he was an awful awful lazy head coach, but he played favorites and not the best players there. When Coker was let go, um had to go cheap and Donna Shalalalaalala was trying to make Miami more academically known. Which she has but they werre broke. And fell for the dubosian logic that if u played at ____ you knew what it was about.
I think he's a tool. We'll see how he does.
Well, I stand corrected! Thanks for the info.
I get that, but he is going to be the LB coach and not the d-coordinator so its a good hire. He can still recruit the dallas-Forth worth area and not Florida so that will not be a problem. He is a good coach when he can focus on one individual unit.
Really poor hire in my opinion...be like hiring Chizik to coach LBs
Having former Head Coaches on staff can lead to dissention issues if they start 2nd guessing their boss to players or administration.
Egos are hard to control. Fans love the idea of these failed head coaches like Dooley or Shannon or Weiss as position coaches...but it can be a management nightmare I would think and they rarely work.
after watching the 30 for 30 about the U, i don't think i would want to hire randy shannon!
Not sure how you get disaster as DC (I am not addressing the recruiting stuff because I will take you word on that) out of these rankings as DC:
During Shannon's six years as UM's defensive coordinator, his defenses ranked as follows in total defense nationally:
2001 – 6th
2002 – 7th
2003 – 2nd
2004 – 28th
2005 – 4th
2006 – 7th
Shannon is a pretty interesting hire. Def. a lot of history, both good and bad. Overall, Pretty good hire considering that it is just as an LB coach.
