BTW, got this from someone on Twitter:
Grant now has 3 SEC winning seasons in 4 years. Gottfried had 3 in 11. Just goes to show you just how much time that one good run to the elite 8 bought Gottfried.
Not apples to apples.
Conference was much better when CMG was coach. SEC's avg RPI under CMG was much better than it has been over past 3+ seasons.
Conference is ranked 8th in the nation this year in overall RPI. Was routinely in the top 3 under CMG. Harder to win then than now.
Grant has done this in his first 4 seasons at bama. Mark was in his 4th season before he got above .500 the first time. He didnt do it again till his 7th season. Mark also benefitted from divisional play and fewer games.
To try and minimize this accomplishment is sad and beneath you nashtide. Your shtick is getting worn out. Some of us are enjoying being proud of our basketball program and coach. We don't need your constant negativity in every thread about basketball.

I understand your point, but that's a difference of 6 seasons!
I really like our team and grant. We will prob have a great record next year.
I agree. Signing only 1 player last year has been a big mistake. That being said, it should pay off next year. Trevor Lacey and Releford should be the best back court in the SEC next year.
What shtick? Using actual metrics rather than gut feelings? Valuing NCAA tournament appearances and wins over meaningless wins in a bad league?
I'm not even slamming Grant saying this. The fact of the matter is the league is down right now. It's an objective fact. Not an opinion. You don't have to like it or agree with me. That doesn't change the fact the league is dreadful. But keep living in fantasy land.
It's becoming apparent to me that Nash Tide was merely throwing out token "pros" in his earlier pros v cons thread. The stat in the OP is so persuasive that its pretty silly trying to justify CMGs piss poor SEC record.

Your shtick is you complaining about grant, undermining his success and trying to build support for firing him.
Grant has done a very good job. 3 straight winning records in the sec is a great accomishment.
I don't care about mark. What he did has no bearing on now or the future. It's irrelevant in analyzing anything to do with coach grant. Mark failed at bama and earned his firing on and off the court.
But if you want to compare the 2 then let's do it. After 4 seasons at bama what had mark done? Grants in his 4th season and has significantly more wins. He hasn't had the luxury of a good conference rpi to get him in the tournament like mark did. With that said at this point he has as more NCAA tourney appearances than mark, who got to the NCAA for the first time in his fourth season at bama where we lost in the 2nd round. He followed that up with a 7-9 record, finished 4th in the west and lost in the NCAA tournament first round. If you want to discuss Nit they both have 1 runner-up finish in their first 3 seasons.
So grant in 3 full seasons and 1 that is close to done has more NCAA tourney appearances, way more conference wins, significantly better conference winning percentage, and more conference division titles (which no longer exist) as mark in the same period.
In a very short time grant has taken us to near the top of the conference and kept us there. He finished 1st in the west in his second season, then 5th in the conference and now sits at 2nd in the conference. That's good stuff.
No fantasy there either. Just the facts.
You are correct that the conference is bad but would love to see your source that shows the league "routinely" being top 3 under Gottfried. Better sure, but not top 3 every year. As to this year, all 14 teams play in the same conference and no one else has done what we have done and not everyone plays Florida twice. If it was that easy surely someone else would have made a good run?
We have some horrible losses but overall I am extremely impressed with what this team has done on the court (at least half of it). The combination of CAG's personality and offensive philosophy gives the casual basketball fan fuel for their fires. The passionate fan certainly has cause to scratch their head at times. If you could build a coach maybe he would have a fight promoter's mentality but I bet Don King would be a shitty basketball cach. Not saying CAG doesn't need to recruit better and get much better on offense, but the lynch mob needs to chill and let's see how things go. He's not going anywhere this year unless he chooses to leave so we may as well support this team.
All this said, I think we probably lose at least 2 if not 3 more coming home but I believe winning 12 conference games for THIS team is a hell of a conference season. More than willing to reopen the discussion next year at this time if no improvement is shown. Roll Tide!

While i agree the league is more watered down this year, that still shouldn't overshadow the fact of the OP. What I get out of the statistic is that CAG is doing something that CMG could never do, and that is win conference road games. No matter how bad the league is, i think we can all argree that it is very hard to win games on the road in conference. While the wins may be ugly and difficult to watch at times, CAG has this team playing with a physical and mental toughness that CMG could never get his teams to do while at Bama. I believe that in itself speaks volumes of the coach we have on our sideline.

Thanks for posting. I was about to look that up. A road game was definitely an auto L under CMG, no matter who we played.
I agree with Nash that the league was tougher back then but let's not act like they were great. If the stats were slightly better for Grant then you may have a point, but they are light years better.
We aren't a great team, but if we can recruit and develop a couple big men then maybe we can be in the near future under Grant.
I can sit here and agree with both sides of the argument...I have long been a staunch supporter of Grant, but his apparent, I've given up persona in a few games just irks me to my wits end...it is unacceptable for me. Now with that being said, I will continue to support him with hopes that our post play vastly improves next year...saying it is anemic is giving it way too much credit...it coded the first week of December. CAG has to make changes in his staff and personnel in an effort to improve the offense, otherwise I can't see him continuing on as our coach much longer...I'll give him all the credit and accolades for gutting out and putting together the season they have, even though it really is a down year in the SEC and basketball in general, but the expectations, yes even in basketball, are to compete for championships, and there is no reason to think that is not a realistic expectation.

Another stat: we've won one sec title in the past 21 years. This late in the season while threads keep popping up in attempts to discredit CAG, the team is one game out of first place. And they are doing this with a sophmore led team.
Next year we will have more juniors and seniors than freshmen and sophomores for the first time in a while.
Gottfried had the luxury of playing guys like Dudley, Shelton, Winston, Pettway, Hendrix, Davidson, Davis, Steele, Gee, etc. while they were juniors and sometimes seniors. Now how many guys on Grants current squad have been at Bama for at least 3 seasons?
