I've heard him state several times that he doesn't evaluate teams or a players development during spring practices and Spring Games. I guess he means they aren't going against real defenses or opponents? I have to disagree to some extent. Depends on who that teams is.
lets see...TJ Yeldon had a huge spring then had a huge season as a TF RB. Yeah I can see the logic.
I think you're right that it depends on what team it is. Ours probably means more than most because we run 1 vs. 1 and of course have more quality depth than others, but even with our spring you kind of have to take things with a grain of salt. In some cases it translates clearly, like with Yeldon, in others it can be deceiving. I think it also helps to really know the team you are watching and have a good grasp of the quality players that they are running against on the other side of the ball as well as who they are playing with on their side of the ball, OL for RBs, and DL for LBs etc...

I think what Bill is saying is that it's hit and miss. There are a couple players on our roster that have been lights out in Spring and in the fall...meh. On the other hand, there is TJ Yeldon...
i.e. Michael Bowman......more so in Spring practice not A-Day

Amari Cooper enrolled early last year.
I think the other posters have it right:
He is better off taking that approach because most teams do not have our quality of depth and many do not play 1s on 1s in spring practices/games.
Since (sense, cents, ect...) we are talking about Bill King, I would like to point out that:
1.) He has a weird voice.
2.) His voice doesn't match what he looks like.
3.) The only person that seems to like him more than himself is his producer.
4.) He is actually really good at what he does.
