as someone who has lived in tampa up until a few months ago and a devoted Rays fan I say good riddance to the guy. He was a perpetual disappointment and never lived up to the hype. I wish the Rays would have traded him earlier so that they could have gotten something for him. BJ seems to have no idea where the strike zone is and will swing at anything. If I was a Braves fan I would not count on a solid average or consistent power. He will go through periods where he is hot but for the most part he strikes out way too often. His base stealing capability is the only thing that makes him a commodity. He also has had attitude problems and run ins with Joe Maddon for not hustling. Even though he has great speed he will never be able to bat leadoff since his OBP is so low. If the light ever goes off watch out but people in Tampa at least gave up on that happening a long time ago.
I would rather have his brother.
Vince Lombardi was asked how it felt to have the best football team in the world. He replied, I don't know. We haven't played Alabama yet.
i'm not sure what to think of this...hate losin' Bourn and Rossy...i love the potential Upton has and I'll be pullin' for him
way over paid
hope he does good in ATL
Complaints about a guy that has stolen 40+ bases multiple times and has hit 20+ homers multiple times. Seriously?
This is a hell of a sign by Wren. He is right in his prime and his best years are ahead of him.
Curious on the down vote, please explain how his production warrants this amount?
Not the down voter, but it's more of what you have to spend if you acquire via FA, which is why you typically no longer see the Braves hitting the FA market.
You're getting a 28 year old CF, for basically his entire "prime" years, with above average to elite defensive skills at arguably 1 of the 3 most valuable spots on the diamond, who has the "potential" to be a 30/30 guy. Granted, he's coming off of a down year, so we actually got a bit of a discount, but when you compare his value to what all of the other FA OF's wanted & what their value is, I think this was the best deal out there.
Now we've got elite defenders at both SS & CF, the 2 most important spots, to go with what should again be a really dominant pitching staff for the next couple of years, along with some pop all throughout the lineup, & we still have both our trade chips & enough remaining available salary to go out & get a really good LF or 3B.
Doesn't hurt having the brother of an elite talent like Justin Upton, who most observers would consider available, on your roster either. Especially if you're looking for a LF.
