Chip Kelly is likely to be named the Browns’ next head coach, barring a last-second change of heart by either Cleveland management or the Oregon head coach, ESPN 850 WKNR’s Tony Grossi said this afternoon.
“I think it's all over,” Grossi said. “Barring a setback to the Browns, Chip Kelly is the next coach…If something would collapse, it would be a surprise. This thing may have been locked up earlier than today" when the Browns received word that Alabama coach Nick Saban would not be receptive to any coaching overtures.
“I understand Saban has informed the Browns, ‘Go on with your search,’ ” Grossi said. “He is not coming from Bama. “
Kelly coached Oregon to victory over Kansas State Thursday night in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He and his agent, David Dunn, were scheduled to meet with the Browns today, but the Philadelphia Eagles also interviewed Kelly for their head coaching opening.
The Eagles said late Friday afternoon they were also pursuing two assistant coaches with the Atlanta Falcons, Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.
More on this story as the day unfolds and details become available.
What does this do to Trent's future?
Kelly has to adapt his O to the NFL, not the other way around. I think Trent may be a huge piece of this puzzle. Getting him in space more would be scary.
I would have thought he would go to the Eagles with Vick as his QB.
^^^ Now what are the barners gonna tell themselves?
I think Trent will be great in his offense. Allowing him time to move around in space will be a good thing. Weeden, on the other hand, may not be there long. Will be interesting to see if the Browns now target a QB with their first pick. None of the top QB targets coming out this year are the type of QB that Kelly has had at Oregon. Maybe they try to pull a rabbit out of their hat a pinpoint a Denard Robinson in the 3rd or 4th rounds.
It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.
-Coach Bear Bryant
His offense can actually function with a power back. LaMichael James was great in his system, and yes I know, they're not identical. Then again, who is identical to Trent?
My guess is that he keeps the team like it is for now, and then Next year drafts Johnny Football. He fits exactly what he wants in a QB. You might see Trent traded for more of a couple scat backs. That seems to be what he wants in a RB not so much the bruising RB type. Plus he wants smaller quicker O-Linemen. Just seems like too good of a match to me.
I think that they should hire Bruce Arians instead, much better fit for the roster. Seems like with Chip Kelly Weeden was a wasted #1 pick.
Dude isn't gonna scap Trent for some little guys. Sorry...but I think a lot are selling Mr. Kelly short myself. He won't be running the exact Oregon offense in the NFL. He helped create the offense New England is running right now. It will more than likely look something like that imho.
