I believe it is a phase. No one expected the Giants to win the Super Bowl. I know they stunk it up earlier in the season, but when they got things together, they had a hellacious running game, and great defense. Defense still wins championships, even the year that 2 QB's break Dan Marino's record and two TE's break the record for receptions, yards, and TD's.
Bottom line is the NFL has altered the rules to the point where it is MUCH easier to pass the ball. DBs are playing with one arm behind their back literally. Linemen have to worry about how they hit the QB. LBers, Safety's etc have to worry about how they hit a receiver across the middle. So the rules have changed to a point it is just easier to pass versus run. It isn't going away unless they change the rules again. I don't see that happening.
