Wow. Doom and gloom much? Never been a fan of Alex Scarbrough at all. He just annoys me. This team looks on paper like it could be Saban's best yet. Not to mention this is the easiest schedule I can remember. An article like this is totally unwarranted and silly. Seems to me that Alex is struggling to find things to write about.
There is little valor for any sportswriter to admit that Nick Saban, as head coach at Alabama, has assembled and coached the finest college football teams of the generation -- perhaps ever -- and that, once again, in the 2013 season, the Crimson Tide will crush its opponents and win another national championship. While the statement may be true, it does not sell advertising. Most of the people who recognize the truth of the statement are members of BOL, and many other college football fans from around the country are desperate to believe their teams have a chance to defeat Alabama. More important, as Coach Nick Saban preaches to his teams, so far, the 2013 Alabama Crimson Tide has achieved nothing ... and without relentless pursuit of perfection and the personal commitment of each player to learn his role, execute his responsibilities and otherwise to do his job with perfection, the team will achieve little later this year or in January 2014. I say, let the sportswriters try to create interest in their columns by disrespecting the talents of another Nick Saban-coached Bama team. It may sell advertising for their journals. It also might supply a part of the fuel this team can use to three-peat and once again assert itself as the national champions.
^^^^This x 100.
My favorite point was the 28th in the country in sacks. Like that is a bad number. That's a very good number when you consider stylistic differences in defenses across the country. Some teams focus all of their energy on getting sacks to the detriment of their defense. We do not sacrifice contain for a sack. Hence us being the #1 defense in the country every year.
Sacks are the most overhyped college football statistic. We will probably go down in that category this year. You don't go after sacks when facing spread offenses with fast QBs. You contain them and make them passing QBs. Take away 1 option from their arsenal.
All that being said 28th in the country in sacks is not a bad stat. If that is our weakness then we are all right.
Yeah, I never understood all the analysts saying Ole Miss gave us fits.
