Agreed!! Field position at a premium.
Do you know the definition of "insanity"? Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.
At some point you have to realize that Cade hasnt been kicking well all year. The leg strength is a HUGE question mark. If hes a longer kicker than Jeremy, it aint by much (5 yards). According to a former kicker cousin of mine, Cade's technique is really bad.

but they play from the twenty instead of the 31 or worse if the kick is blocked and returned for any yards. it's 11 yards better than what we ended up with. However, the 44 yarder makes the most sense. he's made 40-ish yard field goals before.

Not that it matters now, but the call on the first two were the right calls.
Cade missed the first one, but he kicked it pretty good and it had a chance. After the the second one, which proved he was obviously overwhelmed with the situation, I would have tried something different. I wish, looking back, we could have used either Shelley or Cade as a pouch punter, and lined up for a fg then snap directly to them and let them pouch it for about 20 yards.
If that's off the table as an option I'd say just punt it regularly. The OT fg was our only choice, which I think ultimately gets laid on CJM's feet. He knew our struggles like every other person in the stadium. We should have ran a max protect playaction type play on first down and hope for an easy 2-4 yard pass to either Williams/Smelley or even TR out of the backfield, ran the ball on second down and do whatever we had to on 3rd down. At least then if it comes to kicking we would hopefully be inside the 20 and could let Shelley try. Cade was lost after that second kick, the guy just didn't have a chance in OT.
As for punting, I'll admit that I thought this rugby style punting was a joke and wouldn't last long. I'll now take my crow and also ask that we try implementing it. Our punters, for as long as I can remember sans Bearden, have been atrociously inconsistent. For every good punt we'll get two bad ones. At least with rugby style you'll already be ready for pouch style kicks, which would have been a nice option instead of fg #3.

Great Question. I would have done the same F'ing thing on all of them.
But OU did something different and it worked pretty good.
We all know OU had a problem kicking in the TT loss. Did anyone see them this weekend when they punted from the 29? They got it down on the 1 yard line. Its a smart to do that if you think your FG guy has less than a 30% chance, imo, and you have a great punter who can put it inside the 10 (preferably inside the 5) on a consistent basis. I still doubt I would have punted from the 29 in a game like ours.
During the game, I said we should have punted 2nd and 3rd FG's.
