My favorite recruiting story I ever heard was when Bear Bryant was head coach and he had his assistant pick up Joe Namath from the airport and his assistant said that he only had 65 cents to his name and Joe got off the plane and the assistant said he was scared that Joe wanted breakfast but instead he just wanted a cup of coffee and newspaper which back then only cost about 35 cents together and the assistant said he was sweating bullets thinking he wasn't going to have enough money to buy him breakfast but lucked out. The same day Bear Bryant invited Joe to the tower and Joe remembers Bear talking to him and the only words he could make out was when he would point at a player and say he's a stud! Back then it was a very rare site for a recruit to be invited to the tower! Shows how highly Bear thought of Joe's ability! What is you guys favorite recruit story?
My mom and Paul "Bear" Bryant's mom had something in common....They didn't raise anything but a winner!
Staff would love to read some stories! Bama or nonbama related!
My favorite recruit story was when Hightower was either down to Vandy and Bama or committed to Bama and Fulmer showed up at his high school and Hightower would not meet with him. That is how I heard the story back then.
it was probably back in the 90's & there was a light weight linebacker out of Lanette I believe that we were after. He took a visit to Miami. While down there they took him to a place on South Beach where there was nude volleyball. He said he stayed there all day long and committed to them that night. Unfair recruiting if you ask me : ). But I always get a chuckle out of that when you hear about surprise commitments somewhere. You never know...
