If you threw out his 2 best games against terrible opponents, why not throw out his worst games where he played against the best opponents? Throw out USC and UCLA and that accounts for 7 INT's, so now were down to 10TD's and 3 INT's... I know that's messing around with stats but my point is that he had two horrible games and was otherwise mediocre.
He wouldn't ever be the starter here, but he would be a better option than a kid who just went to prom and was not highly touted either. If you told CNS two years ago that AJ was going to be the runaway starter and phillip sims would have left this year, he probably would have seriously considered taking an electric WR in KA along with maynard. JMO.
If RN said he would play at Alabama as long as we took Reuben Foster, you better bet we would take it. Recruits can talk about 'package deals' all they want but we're only going to accept it if we want both players involved. I don't think we would ever accept taking a player we didn't think would benefit us just to take another star player.
If Saban had known how our QB situation would have stacked up this year, I think he probably would have taken both players.
For the stat guys, Maynard played only 3 teams in top 50 defensively last year, only 7 against teams in the top 100, and literally zero against teams in the top 25 or top 10.
For contrast, AJ played 9 games against teams with top 50 defenses (two against LSU), 6 against top 25 defenses, and 3 against top 10 defenses.
To act like these stats should be comparable is a huge error. That said here are Maynard’s stats against teams with just top 100 defenses almost all of which were terrible defenses and closer to 100 than 50...
121/212; .57; 1,425 yds; YPA – 6.7; 5 TDs; 9 INTS
That's pretty awful.
Never said maynard should be our starter over AJ. Maynard is just not nearly good enough. Maynard would be a better option as a junior now than Ely right now as a true freshman.
Do you think Maynard would have better stats playing top defensive teams with Alabama's offense?
I don't think you can throw out his games against basically the only decent defense teams he played...
Again I don't know how good Ely is but damn near anything would be better than Maynard. Reasonable people can disagree but I just can't imagine he would beat Ely out as the backup.
Anyway, moving on, I think that Saban would have taken Maynard to get Allen if that was that and it didn't set any precedents or create any attitude / locker room problems. Locker rooms are chatty places, and once certain kids feel they have leverage over the head coach, then it's all down hill from there. Ask UF about that....
And Ely is a redshirt freshman. The kid from Texas, Morris, is a true freshman. And again I would be shocked is Ely wasn't a better option. Maynard would probably start out with the nod over Morris. Hell Star Jackson had the back-up spot over true freshman AJ McCarron for most of 2009, but if push came to shove, Saban would have burned the redshirt and took his chances with McCarron in my opinion.

Its Cal... They suck...
I guess I just don't think Ely would beat him this year, hopefully I'm wrong. I always thought that Saban did the right thing in not taking the two of them, its just funny to think about a situation where it could have been beneficial to take both of them. Sort of the 'what if' scenarios we always like to throw around.
sorry you're correct, i had him and Morris mixed up. Either way, I wouldn't want any of the 3 to take the reigns this year.
I wouldn't either, to say AJ needs to stay healthy is an understatement. Hopefully this OL can keep him pretty clean as they did the back half of the season last year. My only real point was that Maynard can barely throw. If the ball is going more than 25 yards in the air from him, it's up for grabs.
I don't know enough about Ely, but I am relatively certain that Maynard would lose us games because his arm would make the offense so one dimensional and easy to defend. Now we are extremely deep and good defensively but we would lose our share of games with Maynard no doubt in my mind.
As for whether or not we should have offered him to get Allen I don’t know. I think that if you could do that without it creating an entitlement issue in the locker room or setting a bad precedent then sure, but given that’s not likely the case, I would support the move that was made.
I'm not convinced that guy would be our backup this season anyway. I think the right decision was made and time will prove that IMO.
I'd rather Bama go 100% wildcat with Blake Sims, Dee Hart, Christian Jones, etc. than Maynard start for us. I've seen him play several times, and he's atrocious. And FWIW, I could put up decent numbers in Tedford's system.
