I'm sure there will be many threads about Fowler. I foresee a lot of people stating about "how valuable they always said he was but no one would listen!". (We know, we know... you're awesome and we're dumb) But that's not what's going to really get on my nerves.
Here's whats really going to grind my gears... People thinking that its not a big loss because we're so deep at RB. If Fowler just played RB, I wouldn't be concerned. I was LOVING seeing him at the HB/FB hybrid role. I'm all ears if someone knows other players on our team who are ready for a similar role? The I-formation we were running against UM was insane. I always think that Bama runs what it runs with multiple players that can step in to fill roles, but there is a large part of me that feels this was Fowler's role unique to him. Disagree or agree? Can someone else fill in??
Disclaimer: I'm not saying we're going to lose because we lost Fowler. I'm not freaking out that we're suddenly going to suck. I'm simply stating that I think Fowler being hurts MIGHT take away a fairly big aspect of our offense. Call it a wrinkle if you'd like, but we were probably going to see a lot of Fowler NOT running the ball this year (I mean that in a good way), but equally as important.
That's a piece of our play book that got carted off the field with him.
I'll admit it. I wasn't sold on him as a "true" RB until the Michigan game. His lateral shifts to find running lanes really impressed me, and with a pretty solid burst as well. He can obviously offer a lot of versatility as well. I was watching at a bar here in Nashville with some non-Bama friends, but when I noticed the injury, the game quickly had my undivided attention. Big loss, indeed.
"The Lord just wasn't with us, Coach."
"The Lord," grumbled Bryant, "expects you to block and tackle."

we will have to see how the staff handles it. They may plug kelly johnson in at fowlers spot in that formation. That means more playing time for either B.Vogler or H.Jones. I think johnson could fill that role. Hes obviously not as powerful as fowler but i liked the way he was hitting in the michigan game.
A unique/versatile player that was also a good linebacker his first year at Bama. You don't find those type of players more often. He had his own role and was good at it but someone else will fill the void. Any player who logs in a good amount of playing time is a big loss but sometimes people overstate it a bit as if we will lose games because of it.
Please tell us that you were joking around when you posted this statement:
"...but no one would listen!". (We know, we know... you're awesome and we're dumb)."
He's Brian Stegar with good grades! Love JF! Dude is a huge loss but like any loss of injury in a sport creates another opportunity for another kid that's being coached by the best staff in the country. Along with great talent... I am still confident with everything.
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.”
Agree 100%. That cog was too valuable to be running that late in the game. I mean they put in Dee then Drake and I know neither of them can fill that role. Just stinks royally.
Totally agree with the OP. Also, people need to stop with the talk about Yeldon carrying the load. To ask a true freshman, no matter how talented, to carry a team for an entire year is asking for trouble. Freshman will inevitably hit a wall mid season and Saban understands this. That's why he has them play the relief role for upperclassman. I see now why he has so many running back recruits on the board. Lacy isn't healthy, we just lost Nudie, we suddenly are relying on freshman to fill a larger role. Thank God for the depth we have.
At least it is early and hopefully he can get another year due to medical
He will be able to receive a medical redshirt.
Your the first I've seen thats admitted this. There was a thread just before the season with the majority of people parrotting Joe Tessatore about how Fowler's feet were too close together etc etc etc.
IMO if you had watched Fowler run last year (Granted it was late against tired defenses) you would have seen a guy with excellent vision a nasty stiff arm and good speed for a guy that weighs 245. This is why I said he was a prototypical NFL back. Hopefully he can recover and that will still be the case. He can't afford to lose a step of speed though for that to happen.
Makes for an interesting situation. But I think the i form was more of a new wrinkle. Than a big part of the offense. I don't see that type of formation working very well against a front like LSU has. I think it was a way to get Fowler on the field more. & it was certainly paying off. One back with an H-back is what Saban loves. & we are still well equipped to run that very well imho.

I meant: up until this yr, Fowler was a 3rd string RB. A good one, but still not crucial. And I was tired of people trying to get too worked up about someone that wouldn't come in until the 4th quarter. We all agree that he's a fantastic player, but it is what it is.
Fast forward to this year and his role has expanded to FB and HB. Suddenly everyone is coming out with the "I told you so!". No one ever said he wasn't good.
And yes, I was joking.

I agree BIG TIME.. We haven't run the I formation in a LONG time and he was the Perfect FB... HUGE HUGE LOSS... After yesterday's win, all I could think about was JF.. Hate it for him..
Unfortunately, I completely agree. We'll miss his versatility and I don't think we have anyone else that can do what he does. Watching him line up at FB and truck people was a real treat.
Fowler will recover its not the end of his career. It's football, people get hurt. If you want to cry and freak out call a shrink.
Nobody is crying or freaking out.
Nobody's crying or freaking out. Nobody's saying Nudie's career is over. However, logically speaking, our offense just lost a very special and unique dimension that we may not replace this season. Please don't let my dose of reality cause you to consider crying or freaking out. Saban is in control.
I do think its funny that people are lamenting that we can't run the I formation now. Boy things have come full circle. Thats all we ran in HS in the dark ages. Serious "old man football" but still works with the right personnel.
