As some of u might remember I have been very vocal in my thoughts on CJ since the day he signed a few years ago. Was SUPER high on him! Dude is clutch and I hope he's able to go hard on Sat
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.”
I was pretty pissed at him last week. He made some boneheaded decisions back there.
One bad play on an insanely long punt he caught over the shoulder and one return he should have knelt in the endzone. Outside of that he's a gamer and he'll clean those mistakes up. I agree w/ the OP. CJ is a gamer and I love the way he plays.
He had made a lot of bad decisions this year on punt returns.
CJ needed a year of redshirting and a public butt whooping from Saban. just like CNS did to Arenas to get him to play a little smarter on kick returns.
Yes he has. He also had that penalty during the Arkansas game and he tried his hardest to block someone in the back on a long play against Mizzou but I guess he missed (or the refs missed it).
Everyone makes mistakes but CJ seems to make a couple boneheaded plays a game. Not just mistakes but plays where it seems he just isn't thinking. However, he's a supremely talented player and I love watching him with the ball in his hands and chasing balls down. I just wish he'd get a little smarter out there but that will come...he's still young. Hope he's good to go Saturday night.
C jones is playing Saturday
It's not up for debate
Is that you Nick?
"Character" is doing the right thing when nobody is looking.
No more debating!!! Lol
I was hoping, never debating
Real question is will Nick trust him back there? He's made it hard to do this year.
You got to give him a little slack. I remember Arenas caught a kick off and stepped out of bounds on our 4 yard line in the 08's SECCG vs UF. That was pretty bad too. If we had canned him then I'm not sure we would have won the 09' NC.
Damn...rough crowd in here today.
Appreciate the strong desire to be competitive and confident in his abilities vs calling it boneheaded and questioning if Saban has confidence in him.
He's young, he will mature and continue to learn and improve his decisions.

Maybe we should just bring this guy back!!!
The only way he's going to learn is if he is taught. I assure you the staff is equally concerned. There is a reason they were putting Dee out there.

No. Why wouldn't Cyrus play?
Try and keep up
Not going to get into an undesirable exchange with you here, but taught = coached.
I assure you be has been taught/coached and its a continual process. What young players often struggle with is applying what they have been coached to do or not to do. If you consistently apply what you are coached then you have learned, matured as a player, etc. CJ is on the field returning kicks because he has demonstrated he understands what is expected of him relative to kick/punt returns; in practice. He still has to apply that understanding and make decisions when executing. He will only grow and improve this aspect through experience on the field of competition. Dee Hart was in on punt returns before his injury because he was applying what he was coached to do/not do and making better decisions than CJ, and it has nothing to do with the staffs confidence in him as a returner.
Applying what he is taught on the field is the only way he is going to learn.
The td against lsu in, what, 2003? Is nowhere near worth the cardiac anguish I underwent every time he awaited the punt
Indeed, needs to clean those up real quick.
I certainly appreciate that CJ is a great competitor and has a lot of skill. But mistakes, even if the result of confidence, are mistakes that can hurt the team. I understand the kid thinks he can make plays and tries to do so, but sometimes what the team needs is for him to be conservative. Not putting the team in a bad spot, rather than making a big play, often gets the job done. I'm not saying you don't know this or agree, Bamamanager, you have long been one of my favorite posters on here because you are very knowledgable and forthcoming. If a defensive end or linebacker leaves a large hole in the field by overpursuing because he's trying to get a sack, it's still a mistake even though it is the result of tremendous effort. CJ can get it done, but he just has to realize that not fielding a punt, or calling for a fair catch, rather than trying to take it to the house, is sometimes the proper decision.
Occasional mistakes are to be expected, even by the best. Repeated mistakes are a problem. So far, CJ is making bad decisions on punt returns on a regular basis. While Javy made mistakes at times, they certainly weren't common. I'm not trying to detract from Christian Jones. He will be an outstanding returner. He just needs to be more disciplined in his decision making.
