Let's face it their first choice is Nick Saban.
In my lifetime au has replaced Shug Jordan with Doug Barfield an assistant coach. Barfield with Dye a Bryant protege. Dye with Terry Bowden HC Samford. Bowden/Oliver with Tubberville HC Ole Miss. Tubberville with Chiz HC Iowa State.
What this means is they will NOT hit a home run but rest assured they will round the bases and slide at home and pretend they did.

AU's coaching history proves it is a difficult job to sutain. Their best run in school history, the 80s, resulted in Dye being fired for paying players. Bowden goes 11-0 in '93 and is fired in '98, Tuberville goes 14-0 in '04 and fired in '08, Chiz goes 14-0 and wins the NC in '10 and will be fired in '12. How does that look to a potential candidate? You have to go head to head with Bama and Saban and not only do you have to win, you have to continue to win long term or you're fired shortly after perfect seasons. 7 Sec titles since 1957 is poor. Going from 1957 to 1983 to win their 2nd. Again, GT has almost as many SEC titles as au does and they havent been in the league in over 50 years. Right now au is behind Bama, LSU, TAM, LSU, UGA, UF, and USCe as far as talent, coaching, stability, consistent winning, etc. With Ole Miss and MSU on the rise and Arky a good head coach away from being a top 10 program again. Everyone knew the NCAA was sniffing around au, too many rumors about Trooper, south Florida, Memphis, etc. It was just a matter of time before it became official. au is not a good job right now and history has proven its a very hard job long term. Being a top 20 job isnt much consolation when you're still 6th or 7th in the SEC. It's like landing a top 20 recruiting class doesnt mean much anymore when that still puts you in the middle of the SEC. A top coach would be crazy to take on that dumpster fire right now and try to compete with Bama.
