Because I don't.
I thinke he is an elite coach. He is a very good coach. If AU hires him then they have made a great hire. Not that any if it worries me with Saban.
I think there is a big difference between "elite" and the best auburn could hire.
People always dog petrino about recruiting. But they win, and have put players in the NFL. Is it not possible that he is a good talent evaluator?
Vince Lombardi was asked how it felt to have the best football team in the world. He replied, I don't know. We haven't played Alabama yet.
He obviously is, and can coach the heII out of QBs and WRs. He is a very good coach, on offense, but I don't think he is "elite".
Very good coach, not elite.
Choose not a life of limitation
His records at Arky and Louisville speak for themselves.
No doubt he has issues in his life but coaching football isn't one of them.
Bobby Petrino = Lane Kiffin
Neither cares about defense and have yet to understand that to win a NC you must start there and build that side of the ball. Kiffin just gave his old man a job, his defensive schemes and strategies were good 20 years ago when he was in Tampa Bay, but not now. Petrino on the other hand, just builds offenses and expects to outscore everyone they play. Exciting games, but he will never be a HC for a team that wins 14-10 (or 21-0!!!).
Most overrated coach in history.
A liar, a cheater, never to be trusted by anyone.
1960 Les Paul
I think we the right defensive Cordinator he could be deadly.
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please. -Mark Twain
1. Good offensive coach, but doesn't seem to make many in-game adjustments; probably why the score has been so lopsided against Bama as well as the discrepancy in talent on defense.
2. Really depends on getting elite or very good talent at the QB position. I think Petrino probably gets too much credit and the QB's don't get enough.
3. Great track record WR development/recruiting.
4. Never been impressed with the staff he puts together.
5. PR nightmare. Larry Flynt is rumored to have a better morals and media skills.
What he did at Arky and Louisville is impressive. More impressed with Louisville because Arky pumping in millions into the program helped when he came. I think he can manage a consistent winning program but don't see him ever competing consistent at a high level to win a NC.
^^^ This. The only program that would want him is a program with nothing to lose, then he leaves them at the alter for a better gig.
Well, he's real smart about football stuff.
He wins a lot of big games.
He stands behind his word.
He is loyal.
He knows people in the NFL.
He is humble.
I think he's italian, so he can probably cook good sghetti.
Elite is too big of a word to describe Petrino. He may be a scumbucket and absolute horror of a human being, but the guy can coach football.
What he did for the football program at Louisville is hard to debate. The guy won a BCS bowl at Louisville. I don't care about the competition or the schedule, winning a BCS bowl at Louisville should never happen. He was able to lead that program to a BCS championship in his fourth year there while improving the program dramatically.
At Arkansas, another school that most people said wouldn't be able to compete at a high level, he went to a BCS bowl there as well. Arkansas improved every year under him. Everyone says he can not recruit but either he knows how to identify talent or he knows how to develop it. Either way, he gets the most out of his kids. He generally runs a clean program with no NCAA issues and he holds his kids accountable.
Overall, the guy has some issues. But he can coach football. Everywhere he has been, as OC the offenses were productive and as head coach the program improved. As a head coach in the SEC, he has not won the big games. But, honestly, how many other coaches can make the same statement that Nick Saban and Les Miles beat me every year? If that is the standard, it will be damn near impossible for anyone to be considered elite.
I think he is a good coach. He doesn't know much about defense but he does know how to develop quarterbacks and offensive skill positions. Does he scare me at all? Not in the least. But objectively, I can look at his records and stats and see why people have hired him in the past and auburn wants to hire him now. Under the circumstances, just based on his history of improving programs, it is reasonable for auburn to believe that he is the best that they can do. He may not be worth the risk but auburn is desperate right now and have been in love with Bobby Petrino ever since he left them years ago. It looks like this year they will finally be able to consummate that abusive relationship.
