Evidently, CAG didn't think he was good enough or the right fit for HIS program. Coach Saban doesn't recruit every 5-star either. There is a well documented reason as to why he doesn't chase every big name high school athlete playing football. I bet you don't have a problem with that.
Got to one more year of experience and quit reading.
Whatever...There are coaches that don't have to run around like a raving lunatic. And, I DON'T care for it when Coach Saban does it either. The players play the fucking game. Coach Grant does his coaching and teaching in a controlled manner. The intensity with which he communicates is revealed in his eyes and the tone of his voice. That's the way he does it. He DOES NOT have to display emotion to placate your desire or need to know if he is "fired up" and has "his team's back." I'll bet that every player on that team knows that CAG is their greatest fan and supporter. YOU don't know because YOU are in the stands or working away from the confines of the basketball offices and Coleman Coliseum.
Did John Wooden jump up and down like a lunatic?
4 years is MORE than enough time.
The Grant supporters sound just like the Shula supporters in 2006 that still wanted to "give him more time"....
Thank GOD we didn't listen to them---and especially that the admin didn't...
1960 Les Paul
I appreciate grants class and style. I do. But for whatever reason his approach does not appear to render the intended effects with the refs.
Grants attempt with the poor mouthing double speak earlier this week re: foul discrepancies totally backfired.
Henderson assaulted our players twice and not only didn't get the T/ intentional foul that it deserves but didn't even get called for the foul.
Is this English???
SEC rule: You cannot publicly complain about officiating.
Are you really comparing modern coaches to John Wooden?
I'm going to list out the top coaches in basketball right now. You let me know which ones never flip the f*** out on refs.
John Thompson III
etc. etc. etc.
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE COACHES goes apesh*t on the bench when he needs to. Coach K, Cal, Izzo and Crean are on the verge of having a full-on conniption for a majority of most games. If you look at recently successful coaches like Pearl, Huggins, Knight, etc. they all are effing nut-jobs when they need to be as well. Look at coaches in our own league. Frank Martin, Frank Haith, Tony Barbee. Whether they're good or not, they all have fire.
But you're right. It's probably best that our zombie leader keeps his composure guiding us to the NIT every year.
I'm so glad we have a guy who is reserved enough to never stand up, remove his jacket, or say a cross word. It's just an honor to lose games like last night. Glad we have the opportunity to get skulldragged by a guy like Andy Kennedy (who, incidentally, also loses his marbles once a game.)

Teddy, for someone who professes to know so much more than everyone else...you sure don't know sh*t. The man is in his 4th season....FOURTH. That is MORE than enough time to get "comfortable" in a job. He's a grown man, not a child. You seem to be making every excuse you can think of for his poor performance but the reality is this:
We will now miss the tourney for the 3rd time in his 4 years. The one year he made it, we won no games. Our inside play is the worst I've ever seen and that is ALL his fault. He didn't recruit any big men last year and he recruited the guys we have now. His offense, or whatever that sh*t is, is unwatchable. It hasn't been any good since he has been here. Winning 20 games means nothing anymore. The SEC is horrible, I don't know why some of you don't understand that winning more than you lose in a terrible league doesn't mean our team is good. If we were playing in a decent league we would never have been on the bubble we are now off.
As I mentioned yesterday, what are Grant's big wins? In 4 years, what are the exciting wins for this program? A home win over UK when they went 10-6 in the league and were very inexperienced? I can't think of any other "signature" wins...in 4 years. Just a bunch of wins over mediocre SEC teams.
I think he should (barely) get one more year to turn it around but this program/team is as stagnant and lifeless as it has been in a while. It truly has become unwatchable.
I understand not signing someone just to fill a roster spot, but Grant sat on 3 scholarships this past spring when we had no proven post player and zero depth. You said in a previous post Grant isn't going to sign some project or slouch just to fill a roster, but he's already signed two posts that are nothing but projects. Coty Clarke is a junior, its not like he would be taking a roster spot for 4 years and we had three scholarships to give. He's a better rebounder than anyone on our roster and at the very least would be 5 more fouls a game.
I'm aware, and really don't care. I've seen many a,coach knowingly violate a league rule against public criticism of officiating. They are willing to take the fine or other punishment in order to get their point across. The fact that they are willing to face this consequences magnifies to the league how strongly they feel about it

He didn't just sit on those scholarships. He did not know the entire time what was going to happen with Mitchell, Eblen, and Hankerson. He also went heavily after Cauley-Stein.
Mitchell was good as gone halfway through last season. It was an absolute formality when he excused himself from the program officially in the off-season.
If we're holding open scholarships waiting on Ben Eblen to make a decision....this program is more screwed than any of us imagined.
I've argued about this on the board to the point where it's hard to even care anymore. If people are happy with the product or expect better next year, more power to them. I'll hope we win 3 or 4 games in Nashville and shock the world. I may even go to Nashville to support them.
I hope next year is better. But any improvement made is going to have to come from the players getting pissed off in the offseason. As Theta said, 5 more games on court isn't going to make them any more mature. They need to get in a gym every day from now until October and get up shots. They need to get someone in who can help them technically become better shooters. They need to cut ties with the entire staff save possibly Hipsher/Pettway and Grant needs to determine if he really wants to be here.
Relying on Engstrom coming back and two true freshmen isn't going to cut it. The core group who is playing right now will decide what happens next year. If the two freshmen come in and contribute as much as Pollard did this season, and that's the only real improvement, CAG will be gone at the end of next season. We need drastic changes in attitude and offensive philosophy. This isn't a "they'll grow up" issue.
That's also assuming we don't have any more roster attrition.
I hate to be like this, but there are only a couple of players I'd be sad to lose right now. We can't afford any more turnover just because we need sheer numbers, but on an individual level I can count on one hand the number of guys who would upset me if they left. We've gotta keep the band together to have a chance, but the dead weight is killing this program. I hope he puts them through full-on boot camp in June and July.
I was a big Grant fan when we hired him. I would love for him to get us nationally competitive again. But, the performance of this team is not acceptable and the excuse making by some of our fans is getting embarrassing.
Bama hoops has a history of being competitive nationally. UA hoops is not a deadend job where losers go to make excuses. UA is #30 in the nation in overall number of wins, #2 in the SEC. We have had coahces who won here. We have had coaches who recruited well here. We have produced good hoops talent for the NBA here. We have been a consistent top 25 program. We have had good fan support here. This CAN be a good hoops program. It has been! I have seen it.
A good coach can make the UA hoops program something to be proud of. Will we win national titles every year? No. But, we sure as heck don't need to accept being pushed around and laughed at as a bottom dweller. UA hoops is better than this and the players and fans deserve better.
