I was just wondering how he was doing, and looking for news on him when I came across this.
Former Tide fullback Kevin Turner is keeping a positive outlook despite the deadly disease that is making even the most mundane tasks difficult.
IF IT FEELS GOOD,YOU AIN'T DOING IT RIGHT!
Heck of a guy. Coached at Wetumpka High School for a little while.
I recieved a diagnosis of ALS July 8, 2010. The disease is statisticly a deathsentence for 90% within 2-5 years of diagnosis. There is no cure, no significant treatment and only one approved drug- Rilutek that is considered to be 26% effective at slowing progession...add 3-months to your life!
I am trying to maintain my ability to walk at least thru April 28,, 2012...so that I can walk my daughter down the aisle. I think it is a 50/50 chance to do so.
I am striving to become a member of the 5-year survivors club. I ask all BOL members to support ALS.org with research dollars. or the Kevin Turner Foundation, all donations will help to support PALS with hope. Hope is a good thing!
Raise Awareness !!! The path for a new drug is long and expensive!

God bless and good luck!

hammy, my prayers for you and Kevin. Thank you for the ALS info.
I have a brother in law that lives near Atlanta that has ALS. He is taking part in a research study, but my family has watched his health decline. I know that there is no cure, or real treatment, but faith can do amazing things. Hammy, I know the strength it takes to fight this, and I will keep you on my prayer chain. Every year there is a walk for the cure that is done for ALS research. I know that Birmingham has one, and several other larger cities, they are all on the same day. When the walk day gets closer I will post info on the location and sign up.

My dad lost his battle with ALS in Dec of '09. Keep your head up and spirits high. Will be praying for you!
Flame thanks for sharing a well written article...Hammy you are a real BOL Champion...God Speed.
I thank you all for the words of encouragement and your prayers. I live a blessed life with a strong, wonderful wife and a good family plus a large extended family that supports our fight. I choose to remain steadfast in my Faith and upbeat with a positive outlook. The chance to "live like you are dying" actually allows a freedom to pursue intellectual, spiritual and religious writings....or I could just watch sports and read B.O.L.!! Roll Tide
I live in Miami and support the ALS Recovery Fund. There is a 10K run and a 5k walk/run coming up soon, Join TEAM HAMMY in raising funds for a great cause!
I follow Kevin Turner on twitter. He is amazingly optimistic. Other former players I follow are Mark McMillian (who helps raise funds for autism), Shaun Alexander, Jeremiah Castille. All inspiring men who I am proud to say wore Crimson.
I think I am linking Kevin's twitter account to this post but if not search for kevinturner_nfl

Great news my man, will continue to pray.
"Character" is doing the right thing when nobody is looking.
Congratulations Hammy! My dad died from ALS June 1, 2003, and one of his goals was to walk to my sister down the aisle. It was something that was very special for all of us.
Great to hear this update! Congrats to YOU!
I remember seeing him a few times in bars on the strip in the early 90's, while he was in the NFL. Built like a brick s*house, surrounded by blonde goddesses. It is just horrid to think now that he's just hoping to keep walking another week :(
