NC State may represent the biggest threat to securing Kirby since he's been here. Their AD says that they are willing to look at assistants and would be willing to put up some money.
They would also likely tempt Kirby. NCSt. is not horrible this year and has some talent. They are close to his recruiting ties in GA and play in the weak ACC. It could be a good chance for him to hone his game, stay in touch with southern recruiting and be poised for an offer from either Georgia or Alabama when Richt (52) and Saban (61) retire.
NCSt.'s schedule for next year sets up nicely with home games against LaTech, ECU, Richmond, C.Mich, Clemson, MD, UNC and Syracuse. Road games are FSU, BC, Wake and Pitt. That looks like a recipe for a 7 to 9 win season.
Just food for thought.

Don't see.him leaving for either one
I think NC St is almost an ideal job for a first-time HC. It's close enough to southeastern talent without having to compete with SEC teams on he field. As others have stated, their schedule sets up much easier than it would if here were to take a job like Arky, UT, etc. I think it's becoming unrealistic to expect a prime job to open up for a guy with no head coaching experience. I can't see Bama, Texas, UGA, etc. going the coordinator route because, quite frankly, they don't have to. As good of a head coach as Smart may turn out to be, I can't see him (or any unproven HC) being the first or second choice for a top 5 kind of job right now.
It is rare....but Florida just did it and looks to have made the right move....that could open more doors for assts.
She also said they wanted an "Alabama style" to the program in her announcement of the firing of Tom O'B. I found that interesting.
Texas is often thought of as the top coaching job in the country. I could hardly see them taking an unproven assistant when they could probably get a proven HC.
That would be very fertile recruiting ground for Smart. I like the idea but would hate to lose him. He could clean up in the Carolina's and Virginia and Georgia.
You'll never achieve great things until you believe that's what's supposed to happen
May be way off but here's what i think regarding Kirby. If Jimbo leaves for UT or the barn, Kirby will be hired by FSU.
Debbie Yow. Who wants to work for her? Disaster. Career killer. Not NC State, just her. Ask why MD is broke so bad they had to leave the ACC despite huge opposition from alumni.
