Sitting here on the Sunday after the hard fought victory over LSU, I have noticed and heard from many Bama fans their concern for our defenses vulnerability and depth issues. I have never been a sunshine pumper as I would rather be factual than for someone that sugar coats the obvious. First and foremost LSU was coming off a bye week that obviously helped them out very well. Their O-line has been pretty banged up but it wasnt evident against Alabama because of that extra week to gel together. Hats off to Mettenberger. He played probably as well as any QB since the USC game when Garcia was lights out against us in 2010. Les Miles had a dang good offensive game plan that was executed by Mettenberger as good as he possibly could have. They have a great defense like we all knew but our offense is probably the best I have ever seen in nearly 30 years. The point being, LSU brought everything in the house including the kitchen sink and we still came out on top. At times in the game they were definitely faster and more explosive and again I will credit that to the bye week. We made some very costly mistakes and left several plays on the field that we have consistently made all season. It was the perfect storm for us to lose but we weathered it and at this point I dont care how we do it as long as we get the W. Lastly I think that game will help us more than anything further down the road. We needed that as a team and a fanbase to stay humble and do our part to ultimately get to where we want to go.
Good post. +1
Spot on, very good post. I've definitely been humbled a bit from thinking we were unbeatable... But if we were gonna lose a game this year that would have been the one...
Our offense not executing, mainly due to AJ just being too "jacked up" for the first 3.75 qtrs, is a HUGE reason why our defense appeared to struggle. Heck, our offense wasn't helping 'em at all in the heart of the game, and just kept missing by "that much" on plays that would've broken the game open, or at least kept the sticks moving. 80-ish plays for LSU versus our 50-something is just unreal. ANY team except ours would've been blown out of the water, I guarantee you...

very good post
But consider this... A&M's offense is much better than LSU. Their QB is going to be tough to defend. Sure, LSU played probably the best they can. But our defense uncharacteristically missed some tackles, seemed to be out of position covering receivers, and couldn't get off the field on 3rd down. If you (more important the team) isn't taking A&M seriously, then that's a big mistake. And outside of the LSU game, we seem to play better on the road than at home. I'm worried after a physical and emotional win that we will take A&M lightly.
Now if we beat A&M, then I will feel pretty confident with the rest of the season.

It's as simple as this: the #5 team in the country played their best game at home. We played our worst and still won. Period.
This will be a hard fought game as well I believe, but A&M's defense is nothing like LSU's. An explosive and unique offense with an improving defense, but a defense that can be exposed. It "could" be hard to come back from this emotional win, but I don't think so. I think it would have been harder if we lost. The thing I like is how Bama has fared against spread option offenses with a dual threat QB under Saban. He usually has a great gameplan for them. rtr
I got the impression last night that LSU was better rested as a team than us. Fact is A&M hasn't had the bye yet, so coming to our house should effect them like we were last night. A loud crowd should intimidate some of them and I hope our offense controls the pace of the game and keeps there offense on the sideline. We shall see..... Roll Tide
well said! RTR!
Outstanding win. Your comments are spot on.
Despite what it felt like, we actually outrushed them and averaged 6.6 YPC while holding them to less that 3 YPC. People talk about Les keeping us in the game, but our stubborn insistence to pass when AJ was off instead of pounding the run did the same for them.
I really believe Saban/Smart were caught off guard with how well Mett was able to move their offense.....almost to the point where we were forced to move away from what we had planned to do defensively and show them much more manageable looks.
We will be able to make A&M one dimensional and I don't think they beat us with the pass. And others have said, they don't have nearly the defense - that we ran on at will-
They did play lights out... I think they used the whole 2 weeks on nothing but us... May have even used the Auburn week too... Which may explain the closeness of that game... Cause we know they suck
Also A&M's third successive week on the road.... assuming you can really count api.
I've heard they used part of almost ever week on us and some on summer and spring camp. They may have bit off their nose to spite their face in doing it too. They should not have lost to Florida. Gonna be tough to get a BCS bowl for them now.
