can anyone educate me on what really caused his program to decline and his eventual firing at Bama?
Recruiting declined. Gotfried let outside distractions take his focus away from recruiting.
All I can remember is that the defense sucked and it seemed he didn't have control of the team. Expectations also got pretty high and missing the tourney.
DaphneTider, Pretty simple IYAM. He just simply started enjoying golf more. That is all

he couldn't coach. and apparently you can't play golf with nursing students. especially if the golf course has surveillance. especially if you weren't actually playing golf.
Wait, so Gottfried was Bobby P before Bobby P was Bobby P?
Hot nurses distract me too
^^^^^^^^^^^This guy gets it! Minus the Harley of course.
All I'll say is that the golf course rumor is just one example of a much greater issue. There are many other examples.
xCMG got fat and happy.
The fire that burned in him to motivate for recruiting and creating excitement for the program got stale.
He became content and convinced himself that the product and results he put out were good enough relative to the support being given to the program at UA
That...and all the other issues spelled out here about his system that were always flawed
Recruited athletes that could run up and down the floor and put them in a half court offense that they couldn't run and he couldn't coach. Poor D especially on the perimeter. Players were not pushed by the bench. In other words if you weren't getting the job done you stayed out there without the fear of being benched ie Shea Cotton. And then there was that nurse thing....
I agree, and it was no rumor...
