georgia was really good in 03 and in 06 (i think)
No offensive identity? Can't agree here, man. Overall, we're only 43rd in the country in total offense, but that's not the statistic anyone should worry about. This is:
Rushing - 2,570 yards, or 214/game
Passing - 2,626 yards, or 218/game
Let me tell you, any offense with as many playmakers as we have that is THAT balanced is a nightmare to prepare for. You have a lot of field to defend.
By contrast, Georgia is 24th in offense overall, pretty good, but there's about a 90-yard difference in balance:
Rushing - 2,281 yards, or 190/game
Passing - 3,283 yards or 273/game
We're exactly who Saban wants us to be: balanced. One back with 1,001 yards, another with 847.
The other stat that could be key is penalties. Nationally, we're T-7th with 4/gm for 34 yds/gm. Georgia is 89th (7/50). We'll see if that makes a difference.
Jawa - good stuff. Not sure I'd agree this is Richt's best team, though. I think his first SEC championship team was. Will be fun to watch - I'll be there!
I think red zone could be a big key....we obviously have to limit big plays, and Murray's completion percentage drops dramatically in the red zone.
THIS ... well said. +1
Great post. I think QB play will be the key. I would take AJ over Murray any day of the week, but I thought there were times in the LSU and TAM game when he looked very tentative throwing the ball, especially noticable when he missed the recievers that were behind the defense for sure TDs. When the game is on the line though he definitely performed with great confidence. I want to see him come out of the gate with that presence, if he does the game won't even be close, if he is tentatve we might let them hang around. Any case we win this game and get ND in the championship. I want revenge for the early 70s when they cost us a couple of NCs.
1/1/1975 (Orange Bowl) Alabama 11 - Notre Dame 13
12/31/1973 (Sugar Bowl) Alabama 23 - Notre Dame 24
Revenge is a dish best served cold, and this dish is frozen and ready to serve.
Vince Lombardi was asked how it felt to have the best football team in the world. He replied, I don't know. We haven't played Alabama yet.
Our stats are amazingly balanced and this offense is extremely talented. Great OL, great QB, great Rbs, and Emerging WRs. Don't doubt my comments about our team. The offense is very good. My concern is when we are struggling against tough competition, where do we hang our hats? Do we line up and run the ball to gain confidence or shake the opponents? Do we start throwing it around like Mike Leach? Do we take what they give us? Not hardly, we throw when they have 6-7 in the box and run when they stack the box. Happens quite a bit. None of the above... Every team needs an identity, Saban mentions it every year. We haven't found it yet.
The OP implies in #4 we will run the ball this week more than before and we waited till now to keep the RBs fresh. I just don't agree. We may run more, I can hope since UGA run defense is not as good as people are making it out to be, but it won't be because we tried not to run much till this point. If we do, its because Saban "encourages" more running plays. When we won the 09' and 11' National titles, we leaned on Ingram and Richardson when the QBs struggled. Running the ball was the offenses identity. We would even go wildcat with Ingram/Richardson with the game on the line to get an extra blocker. Whats this years identity?
Not saying they aren't good, but every team needs something they hang their hat on. Offense and Defense. What is the defenses identity? Stopping the run? Stopping the pass? Bend but don't break? Don't bend at all? The defense is extremely balanced too. They are very good all around but they can't take from one area to help another because we get gashed in the losing area.
This team is very very good, but they are still looking for their identity. I hope they find it this weekend and we advance to the National Title. We may not need to and still win, but it would be easier. UGA doesn't have one either if that helps. But ND does...
RTR and get them Dawgs!
Fantastic analysis by one of our very own. However games are won on the field. A&M was a prohibitive underdog by most everyone but pulled it out. The LSU QB played an unimaginative game, no one knew he had it in him but they lost.
To sum it up, I hope Bama pull this off but the game will be determined on the field and big games hardly ever follow the script and analysis of fans. So let's sit back and see how we win.
You are officially my favorite poster now. You absolutely NAILED the game!
He was spot on to the 100th degree wow.
Great post Jawa. Curious if you think we got Georgia's best game yesterday?
Both played their hearts out.
Yeah I believe we did. UGA fans/players would point out many things they "could have done better", "missed opportunities", etc.......but the bottom line is that's football. 2012 UGA isn't a great team (nor is 2012 Alabama), therefore I don't see any scenario where you could expect a program that's historically struggled in their biggest games to put together a better performance against top competition than they did last night.
Well this ended up being spot on!
Well done my friend!
Great post Jawa
