Not trying to be smart, but we beat more than 1 tourney team this year. Now, totally disappointed that we didn't make NCAA tourney. But with no legit big man and inside game, can't believe we were even in the discussion of making it into the tourney.
From preseason ACC champs to 11 losses and an early exit in the NCAAs.
So telling the honest truth about the guy is dumb, because we are currently in the NIT's? Lol I don't know how long you have been on this board, but it is fueled by negative nuggets. Are you honestly shocked he is not looked highly upon?
Eat clean. Train Hard.
I'm not really "shocked" by anything. I'd just hope we'd have more class when talking about a former player and alum.
There's this really bitter disdain people have for him for some reason. Again - I could take or leave the guy. But damn...he played on some of Wimp's best teams, guided us to our best NCAA Tourney run in history, and our only #1 ranking of all time.
I guess I don't hate him because he was coach when I was in school, and I was a student during 4 straight tourney trips. I was in the building when Pettway hit the buzzer-beater vs Florida to clinch the league title. I was there when we beat a great MSU team like a facking drum. I was there when we beat bad Auburn teams by 45 instead of losing to them.
So maybe I have a personal appreciation for the good times we enjoyed under him. His teams from 2001-2006 were a whole HELL of a lot more fun to watch than our current one. I'm not slamming the current players - but that's God's honest truth. I can't imagine what I'd give to have Mo Williams, Kennedy Winston, Erwind Dudley and Chuck Davis back in this program.
I think his last few years just turned a lot of people off. I think we could have been a lot better of a team if he would have kept some stuff in his personal life in order. He is an average coach and great recruiter. That's just my opinion and I don't hate the guy or anything.
We lost our leading scorer, rebounder, and only post presence from last year. Looking at it on paper that is only losing 1 guy and returning 4 starters , but in reality jmike was a lot more valuable last year than most realized.
I'm not saying it is acceptable or what my personal expectations were coming in, because I wear my crimson colored glasses and am a glass half full guy, but we finished about where most college bball experts thought we would going into the season.
For the record Gottfried coached his team far below preseason expectations. If you recall, Grant actually coached his team beyond preseason expectations. Spin it however your agenda works but that is the truth.
I'm not defending Grant but if you are championing Gottfried over him, you only insult your basketball credentials. The big thing Gottfried has over Grant is his willingness to befriend some of the AAU power brokers (not saying he is cheating).
I'll honestly say that I'm bitter towards Gottfried because he didn't keep doing what he was doing in winning games at home and getting into the tournament. I appreciate the years he got us there as a player and coach, but I just can't openly cheer for him at NCState. As fun as those teams were to watch at home(I was also at the beatdown of State), they were equally painful to watch on the road and in late March.
I don't think most folks cheer against him, but they prob get some satisfaction from basically saying "we told you so NCState". I think most folks thought he would go there and win big with that roster he inherited. Most Bama fans prob try to make it known that he'd underachieve as he did here most times and were likely labeled as the "bitter Bama fan". Well now he underachieves and they can shrug and say "we tried to tell you".
Mark Gottfried is scum.
Mark gotfried failed at Alabama. He earned his firing both on and off the court.
Why in the world do we compare him to Grant?
When I critique or praise grant I do not compare and contrast him with a coach that failed at Alabama.
Grant is evaluated based on what he does relative to our circumstances now. There is zero reason to discuss him and gotfried.
Also don't mistake this for support of anyone. It's not. One's failure in no way helps or hurts the other coach. Just because mark failed doesn't mean grant deserves to be fired or retained.
Honestly, I haven't cheered for or against him. I probably haven't watched more than 3 or 4 minutes of NCSU basketball in my life with the exception of the years we played them (ironically when CMG was coaching here.)
I don't have a whole lot of love for him beyond the personal gratification he brought us during the era I mentioned. But I don't hold any ill will to him. He's really no different to me than another opposing coach, which is why applied the logic I did earlier. I wouldn't put Steve Alford on blast for losing to Harvard last night. Yeah - they choked. Massively. But again - they were a 3-seed in the tournament. They made it, and my team didn't.
I just wish we'd all be above the petty comments. People don't treat Shula this way, and Gottfried did a WHOLE lot more as a coach here than Shula did. They're both sort of dead to me.
I've never understood the connection between the current state of Bama's programs relating to one's ability to have or expess an opinion, pro or con, on another program or anything else.
Bama is winning national championships in football, but that doesn't make me any more qualified to judge, just as Bama's basketball struggles doesn't mean my opinions have less value.
Just my opinion. If you disagree, note that Bama has won 3 of 4 in football, so I know what I'm talking about. (G)
You must not be good at context clues...read my post..slower. Ok now if you read between the lines..Gottfried took at Top10 talent team, and made it a 1st round lose #9 seed. Grant takes a average talented team, and won 20 games for 3 years straight. Let me help you out here..If Grant coached NC State he would be a 3seed or above. So if we had the talent NC State does we would be as well....
I have no beef with Gottfried but he is a below average coach with elite players (2 NBA players), Grant is a "good" coach with below level recruiting tools at Alabama. We are a football school like Duke is a bball school. NC State gets more talent and Gottfried is still a below average coach who lost in the first round...guess who took a WAY worse talented team and did that last year? Who would you rather have Grant or Gottfried?
You do realize that during the elite 8 season Earnest Shelton got hurt and missed part of the Conference schedule. He was the leading scorer when he went out. If he would have played the whole season the seeding would have been different. Also going into that season Bama lost its two best players in Moe Williams and Erwin Dudley from the prior season so they probably over achieved.
CMG's teams perform well when there are no expectations and falter when there are high expectations.
So far though there is no proof that Grant is even equal to CMG.
