I took my son to ND when Bama played them with Bill Curry as the Bama coach. I've been around every SEC team over the last 40 years and many Big Ten and ACC teams and I can say that ND is the rudest fan base in the country. They mocked our fans in every way and they meant it. It wasn't just the intense competition from fans in the SEC it was very personal and degrading. This occured inside and outside the stadium.
I lived in Chicago for almost 17 years and all the big football news(besides the Bears) is ND football. They have the support and loyal fan base of most of the Union's that run Chicago.
So, what you saw was a total lack of class.

Every fan base has a-holes. Gotta say from my experience on Monday, the ND folks I talked to we're just happy to be there. Not even close to the way tons of LSU folks acted last year, and nowhere near as dilusional as many Texas fans in Pasadena in 2010. Of course that was before the game, and I'm sure things were pretty miserable over on their side. They mad.
I think the respect between Penn St & Bama started with the long close friendship between Bear Bryant and Joe Paterno. It spilled over to the fans, etc..because our coaches were held in such high esteem. I'm grateful for it as well. RTR
EXCELLENT!!! Love it!!!
That ass whipping could not have been laid on a more deserving fan base. The acted like they were the team playing for their third NC in four years. I have never seen a more arrogant group of people who haven't accomplished shit. Tuesday morning they were as bad as Auburn fans with the excuses.
My friends and I are tailgating prior to the game, this ND fan comes by us, the ladies that I was with (including wife) exchanged a Roll Tide as the guy walks by and he comes back with Go Irish......he gets 50 yards up the road, turns around and proceeds to start telling a joke about how southern women suck c..k....
That's about when I get up and start jogging his way.......I get up in the guys face and called him a classless piece of shit....he had backed up to where there were several "golden domers" around him........I called him out and told him that we was a disgrace to Notre Dame....told him I was lucky I wanted to go to the game......which is about the time my friends had caught up to me to pull me away.....
all good....however, I probably got a little obnoxious as a result....I was the guy asking everyone if they had seen the Notre Dame front seven....you'd think in a crowd that size someone would have seen them.

ND fans were awful for the most part. Just really scummy people. I ran into a few who were very nice, but for the most part even the tolerable ones were arrogant and rude.
The vast majority seemed to be insufferable drunks, though.
I really expected the fanbase of such a sophisticated and historically/traditionally relevant program to conduct themselves with more class. I expect Auburn and LSU fans to act like yokels, but ND fans were held to a higher standard and they disappointed.
The main issue was alcohol. If you want to drink before, during or after a game - fine. Just handle your s***. Don't act like some 16-year-old who's never been out past curfew before. The few completely sober ones were fine, and there was a generational thing going on too. All of their older fans were OK (this surprised me, as I expected the ones who remembered the glory days to be the most conceited.) Quite the opposite. Their younger fans were rowdy a-holes. The elderly ones were fine.

There are literally no attractive Notre Dame fans.
