Has Roy Williams turned into the Mack Brown of basketball? I've followed NC back to the days of Jordan, Worthy and Perkins. Has he underachieved? Is he on his way out? Would they fire him before he retired?
Easy to get lazy & complacent at a place like that imho.

Also for trivia, what does the point guard from a 1981 NC team have in common with Chuck Norris ?
There is no way he has underachieved. He started coaching at UNC in 2003. He has won 2 national championships in 10 years, the last coming in 2009. That is pretty damn good. Been to the elite 8 several other times. He has a young team this year that has gotten substantially better as the year has progressed. If these kids all stay in school they will be one of the favorites to win it all next year. They would have probably won the tournament last year if Kendall Marshall had not gotten injured in the 2nd round.
Dean Smith only won 2 national championships in 36 years. Did Dean Smith underachieve?
He's won 2 national titles in the last 8 years, been in 3 Final Fours and 6 Elite 8's, including each of the past 2 years.
Unless you're comparing him to Saban-like success, I'd say he's had a decent run there. They're down this year, but to question his coaching is unrealistic. He's had the 2nd best program in one of the best leagues in basketball for nearly a decade.
I'm not a Roy Williams fan, but to compare him to Mack Brown is a bit harsh. His teams do this a lot. They will sustain success for three years or so, have a subpar year, then crank it up for a long run with a solid recruiting class with the same talent the previous year. They'll be back next year.
I'm a Carolina alum and I'm not a fan of his; I can see some validity in the Mack Brown comparison. Having said that, he has had considerable success and appears to have the core of a strong squad for next year. The one and done rule has changed the game so much that any comparisions to former coaches, teams, etc., is a bit strained. It's a lot more about recruiting, and less about coaching, than back in Dean Smith's day (when I was in Chapel Hill).
I guess underachieved was to harsh. By the talent they get in year in and year out that he would have won more titles. I know 2 is great but seems like something has been missing the last 2-3 years.
He won 32 games last year and 29 the year before. Both of them being Elite 8 appearances. The year before he missed out of the tourney he won a national championship. So, no. And he's not even close to being on the hot-seat.
I think that's the problem on here. Every coach is being compared to Saban, which isn't fair. One could even make the argument that winning the National Championship in Men's BBall is more difficult than winning it in College Football (longer season / conference tourney / 68 team tournament).
If Roy Williams is on the hot-seat, then so is Calipari. Here's a repost from another thread discussing Duke vs Unc. Somebody on there had the same opinion of Roy. How can you say this guy is anywhere close to Mack Brown?
North Carolina has more NCAA Championships over the last 10 years than Duke (two vs. one).
North Carolina has more Final Four appearances over the last 10 years than Duke (three vs. two).
North Carolina has more NCAA Tournament wins over the last 10 years than Duke (27 vs. 21).
North Carolina has recruited more McDonald's All-Americans out of high school than Duke (64 vs. 54).
Over the past 10 years, North Carolina has had more players drafted by the NBA than Duke (16 vs. 13).
2012 - Elite 8
2011 - Elite 8
2009 - National Championship
2008 - Final 4
2007 - Elite 8
2006 - 2nd Round
2005 - National Championship
--Side note-- If any of you are UNC fans, be careful to disclose that information on here. People will claim that your arguments have no validity because you like another college team other than Alabama. You might be executed by firing squad too.
damn and i thought us bama fans had gotten spoiled. Like the poster above said, they would have won it all last year, had marshall not gotten hurt. I also believe henson was hurt too. I dont care how good kentucky was, UNC would have won it.
The only reason the team is not playing up to normal standards is b/c of their youth, not to mention they lost their entire team to the draft last year. Give the guy a break. They will be in the hunt next year, especially if Mcadoo stays. With that said.......
GO HEELS!!!!!!!! F DUKE
this is a great post and 411 and tends to support the comment I made in the coach Cal thread about coach K and he always seems to have 1-3 guys on the team that have been in the program, aren't the one and dones and never intended to be and I think that is the difference in his consistency. With that being said, I do think Roy has also had success doing the similar things at UNC.
I can tell you nobody I live around or work with up here wants Roy fired; they all have very high expectations for their basketball program, but thinking there's a better coach out there that is interested and available doesn't happen because they know better. Roy was their guy when coach Smith retired and they didn't get him; they suffered through the Dougherty years and convinced Roy to move. Roy has continued to perform at the level he did at Kansas in a much tougher conference. Two natty's in 10 years is quite an accomplishment and the list of equals is quite small over that same span....Uconn, UF, and UNC

It can be argued that Roy isn't the best coach in college basketball. However, he is absolutely in the top 7. He is a Hall of Famer and will win it all again before he's done.
Above all else though he has earned the right to have an off year without having his coaching ability called in to question.
I can't put in to words how incomparable Mack and Roy are to me.
i dont know anyone out there could be better than roy williams that carolina could actually get. They arent getting coach k, donovan, etc.
Honestly, lets think about this. RW and Carolina have lost a ton of underclassmen while winning championships along the way.
Felton, R. McCants, S.May, M.Williams, W.Ellington, H.Barnes, J.Henson, K.Marshall, Ty Lawson, Brandon Wright, Danny Green, Ed Davis. He also had the 2 5* twins that transferred to UCLA. I'm also probably missing some but that's 14 kids he's lost...3 of them left as freshmen if i'm not mistaken.
If some of those kids stay another year he probably has 1 if not 2 more championships. He's lost a ton to the draft and still has stupid numbers. RW has done a very good job at Carolina. If anything you can say Matt Daugherty under achieved....not Roy.
