Bama has one problem that gives it a host of others. No inside scoring ability. Jacobs is a guy but he doesn't play smart enough to remain on the floor. You can't jump shoot and win every night. Didn't see or hear game yesterday but Grant sounds pissed. Yet, he does that and I've seen him quit coaching, imo.
I will say this. Andrew Steele came in last season and the season changed. He led the team. We can't have one guy that others respond to.
I tell people in passing that "CAG is in trouble" but I don't get the "Fire CAG" threads 1/3rd of the way :into the season. If you didn't know we'd struggle with what we have down in the post, you're naive. Jamychal Green for all his short comings was a scorer down low. No post presence and you could face a L any night. Look at how many starting line ups he's gone with. I think some fans have already dug in and we some stubborn sobs when we wanna be.
I'm in too. Basketball is a little different than football. We will NOT win all of our basketball games.
Some fans just feed on "doom and gloom"
It's one thing to be supportive of who is in there right now. It's another thing to compare him with Coach K, arguably he greatest coach all time. Get real.
One thing has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Support the coach and support the players as much as you can, but Don't get it twisted about Coach Grant's philosophies. The team he has now cannot run his system. I want him to succeed so much here that I would love to see him adapt to the talent level that he has. We saw a glimpse of this last year but eventually went back to old habits. In my opinion one of the best games we played last year was on the road against LSU, right after Coach sends home those players in a rental car. Sure, they struggled on the road without the normal players in there but they fought and fought and fought some more. Seems like the only time they fight like other teams do is when their attention has been grabbed somehow.
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.”
Roll Grant! Alabama has improved each year except the year that we had to replace two all-sec talents. 21-11 in the SEC the past two seasons. His prized class is in its sophomore season. We play with consistent effort. We play unselfish. We win on the road. We have a personnel issue which it is Grant's job to correct. I think it's cray to bail on this guy before his 3.5 season mark.
2009–2010 Alabama 17–15 6–10 T–4th (West)
2010–2011 Alabama 25–12 12–4 1st (West) NIT Runner–up
2011–2012 Alabama 21–12 9–7 5th NCAA
Signs of improvement, no?
I think he has earned a few more years. People are too impatient and emotional on this issue. If we keep hiring and firing coach until we find the next Coach K then we could be doing this ish for years and when we do find that guy he will parlay his success to get a job at a basketball school.
I've got a feeling that Anthony is going to turn this program around and build us a program that we'll be very proud of.
I'm very grateful that Mal cut CMG loose. We were not heading in the right direction with him. We were fortunate to get CAG. He could have stayed at VCU; he could have gone to UGA. But he chose the Capstone and has invested himself in everything about building a quality basketball program. I wholeheartedly support him and look forward to better times ahead.
We just lost to mercer at home. After losing to vcu and freaking Dayton. Wake up guys and look at reality.
I am in the camp of wait and see. January and February are going to be big for CAG and the team. If we can get 9 conference wins I think everybody on here will change their tune. I know people are going to say "no way we get wins in conference after the way we played yesterday" but remember this team had Cinci on the ropes and should have/could have won that game. I know, it's still a loss. But come January, when football season is over and we actually start having a meaningful attendance against some good teams, I think we'll see a change -for the better.
It's natural for a team to feed of the energy of the crowd. I'm not laying the blame of the early losses on the fans, I'm just suggesting that when it's a more big-game like atmosphere, the players are going to feed off the energy and pick-up their play. So far their effort seems lack-luster, and sitting at the game yesterday the whole environment just felt boring. Sure, the team could play better and then we'd have had reason to cheer - but they both go w/ each other and either could possible pick up the other.
If this team can get to 18-20 wins, they'll likely be in the tourney, and there'll be folks praising Grant - and I still think this is a likely scenario. If they continue to struggle and only get in the 15 win range then the pressure will ramp up, and Grant's seat will rightfully get hotter. I think this team could really go either way, and we appear to get tossed right into the fire Conference-wise where starting 3-1 would be a huge success. I just say wait-and-see, support the team and let the cards fall where they may. No sense in quitting on the team now, especially since going by attendance there isn't much support to lose (or loose lol) right now.

"Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places you have to look at it right."
Also, side-note - you guys think there is anyway the AD could make all tickets sold BBall wise prior to conference play could be general admission? I think that would solve some problems of the Tide Prider's buying season tickets, in the good seats, and not showing up til SEC games. Then the folks buying up the remaining season tickets could have decent seats to start the year and have assigned nose-bleed seats for the SEC games. Just a thought
I am too!!!!!!!!!!
count me in for CAG.....
And "who knew" Coach K was going to be the greatest coach of all-time in 1981-82? I'm sure there were a plethora of folks saying the exact same things about K that people are currently saying about Grant.
Looking at Grant's record over his career up until this juncture, I think he will be an elite coach in 4-5 years. I'm NOT saying he'll be Coach K good.......but I think Bama would be prudent to be patient.
You get out of it what you put into it!
Agreed. Can't just keep recycling coaches every 4yrs after we're not knocking on the door of the Sweet 16. Never make progress that way. I believe this program has the potential to be a yearly tourney team, and the POTENTIAL to one day be a championship level program. It seems like a bunch of our fans think that our basketball program is our football program, when it's just not. Not saying that we have lower standards for basketball...just that we're talking about different animals. All our football program needed was the right coach...plug him in and we've resumed our place atop college football. Basketball, here at UA, requires a little more patience and building.
And speaking of what hurts our recruiting, in addition to struggling, is the empty ass arena. We have some fair-weather basketball fans. This program needs our SUPPORT. (que the "I refuse to support a bad product" crowd). With that attidude, that "bad product" will never get better. (I've my flame suit zipped all the way up!) Coleman is packed when we succeed, empty when we struggle...oftentimes both extremes in the same season, just to show how fickle our basketball fans are. Were it our football program, yes we'd still get the griping about the product, but bet Coleman would be nowhere near as empty as it is!
And as for the players, these kids are playing their asses off! If you want to talk about their effort, see how easy a time YOU would have getting emotionally high for an arena that lacks asses in seats, because the fans aren't there during during our rough patch. I think if given time and patience, Grant can do great things here. I don't expect everyone to share my opinion, but that's just my 2 cents (2 sense if y'all want a BOLism)
What made him the exception. If coach K was given time then why not Grant. Before Grant came noone even paid attention to basketball. You can't throw out the young coach struggle cars either because all the great ones did.
Im sure people with your mind set said the same thing about a young Urban M. or a Young N.S. It has every thing to do with the topic. Time will tell but without time no one will truely no what a coach can become. His point was no one new Coach K would be the greatest of all time unless he has time to build his program. Thats with every basketball coach that comes in with out talent. First round talent.
It's been established there are 47 Grant supporters vs 4700 who think he should be fired.
What exactly do you define as "time" ? Would 4 years not be enough time to show signs of progression? We are talking about recruiting 10-12 players to field a competitive basketball team that will progress through the years and get better. The program wasn't on probation when he took over, and why has he not recruited a solid big guy? You don't bank your season on a "project" such as Engstrom or Gueye. That is not a knock on them either, because God bless them....Grant offered and they took advantage of it.
It's not as difficult to evaluate as some make it out to be. Are we better today then we were when he took over the program? The answer is no.
U sound like I'm advocating firing him. No no. I thought it was kinda dumb to compare the start of the two is all. I do not think he should be fired at all. I think if anything he should definitely reevaluate some staff members and his own recruiting evaluations.
Goood good stuff bro +1
