I was talking with a friend of mine over the weekend who is a scout for a NFL team. Just talking college football and getting his opinion and some other opinions he has heard on what teams look like coming out of the spring. Of course they are looking for individual guys but they are going over a lot of film coming out of spring and can see what teams look like as a whole by judging talent.
He said as far as he is concerned Bama is on a level that is just so far ahead of everyone he has seen, he said it was like night and day compared to other programs. He said the closest team in talent wise to us right now would be FSU...just judging on the hoof talent. He said of course LSU would be right behind FSU along with UGA. He is not sold on LSU's QB situation, doesn't like their WRs and feels like their LB corp is going to be a hole in the D. He hates the LSU Offensive plan and direction. Described it as something a JV coach could poke holes in all day. He said all the talk about USC shouldn't last long and if they had to play Bama or LSU they would get run a$$ over. They are just too weak on D and their O line would be abused. He likes OU a lot. Does not like our first opponent Michigan...he said if that games stays under 17 Michigan should view it as a moral victory.
He said he thinks most media doesn't give Bama a chance to repeat because they know how hard it is to repeat but if they really looked at the talent on the field and how it has being prepared it shouldn't be that way. He said Clemson looks all world till they start hitting and working on drills similar for FSU. Pro scouts can't tell much about what Oregon has that their practices were so discombobulated and all over the place that nothing makes sense and players don't work any fundamentals.
He said Bama looked like a machine going through their spring and their only hole is on O and that's the other TE/HB that is really vital to our game planning. He said even CNS was concerned and that it was a must have to find someone to fill that role. He had other opinions on other teams but none really mattered. He did say that Bama is probably the only team that won't rely on a freshmen coing into fall camp to fill a hole either starting or on the 2 deep. Nothing earth shattering but he put it into perspective from someone who has to look at a lot of film. His opinion was that coming out of spring Bama and OU will play for the NC.

Can't argue with any of that!
I don't get the media love affair with LSU...or USC for that matter.
1960 Les Paul
The media has always had a thing for USC...if they look like anything close to a contender they will raise them even higher. If you look at them closely they look explosive on O but mostly on the edges. Barkley can put the ball in the hands of their WRs all over the field. He tends to lob the deeper throws though. The O line isn't going to knock anyone off the ball. The D is going to be playing with their heels back and giving up lots of scoring opportunities. That's just the reality of USC. As my friend told me on LSU. He doesn't think they can develop a qb if there was a gun to their head. He said recruiting top level talent and Chavis was keeping them in business right now. Why the media loves them is beyond me...I think Les is such a loveable goober to the media. He is almost a sympathetic figure. That's all I can imagine.
On Alabama: CeCe Jefferson - "It was a bunch of beautiful women..." Reggie Ragland - "oh the females of course..."
But really who are u gonna build up? Only two teams get to play for it every year. & throughout the year you might have 10 teams that at some point during the season are in the conversation. Bama, LSU, & USC based would be a good starting point imo.

OK, why does everyone hate helenatider? I see some comments here and there that he regurgitates; do people think that he regurgitates everything he posts (i.e. do people think that he really has no friend who is an NFL scout and made this up or got this elsewhere?) I don't have a dog in the fight; just curious and feel like I've missed something.
I think that's a major thing too. Right now the media is just trying to build somebody up to generate some drama. Who else can they choose. USC and LSU have the obvious talent. I think most media feel like a repeat of 2010 is on the way for Bama and most are hoping that happens.
good stuff...I would love for Bama to destroy usc in a NC game...
Can't argue with that, thanks for sharing.
well said. I don't get it. People just like to pile on. It's like "online bullying" to them.
IMO the biggest reason for the USC hype is because they are not a SEC team. Thanks HT
A big gulp huh? Alright
Honestly, a NFL scout probably isn't the best person to predict how college teams will do. UGA had 7 players drafted. They lost 3-4 games. OU had 4 players go in 1st round a couple years ago after going 7-5. Yea, I know they had injuries but still. Hell, heard reports on this board last year of all the studs on Florida st's "D" ....they were good but not elite as a team.
LSU seems to be overhyped IMO. they lost a QB, WRs from an offense that wasn't very good to begin with.
OU is a tough team to hype nowadays, since they consistently choke. The name "Big Game Bob" has become ironic. This is the same reason it's hard to hype Uga, regardless of talent level.
Usc is easy with some quality first round talent on O. Other than that, it's all surprises. There are several teams that will be good, and a few guys who will finally out things together and be good.
After Bama, lsu, and usc, it begins a big queston mark.
Well he wasn't so much grading who he thought looked the best just on talent alone. What he was saying more than anything was how teams who had a ton of talent couldn't produce. Like the comments he made about Clemson and FSU. He said they appeared like very talented teams but were sloppy and didn't prepare and or practice with quality effort. UGA he put up there but, like he told me 4 years ago...UGA doesn't put emphasis on fundamentals and practices soft.
OU has had a rash of injuries over the years and they tend to have really physical practices under Stoops and it gets guys hurt during spring and fall camp. He pushes them to be tougher but they just can't stay healthy. I also don't think their S&C program has caught up to the style of play they want to be. Hard to be a physical team with a finesse character.
LSU is overhyped but their D will be nasty again. However just like my buddy said, its one thing to burn an Ole Miss D and quite another to burn a Saban led Bama one. Till they can somehow create an advantage with their QB and receivers against us they will not be successful.
Welp...see ya later!
Those your ski's? Both of em?
