is why there aren't more cb's lining up to play for the top secondary/head coach in football? Outside of Dee and Dre, we really have struck out on the top 2-3 ranked corners each year CNS has been here. L. Joyner, TJ Mcdonald, Greg Reid, Hargreaves, among others have all chosen to go to school elsewhere. This is just unfathomable to me, you'd think with all the success of the program, the coach, and the available playing time more would be begging to play here. What gives? Not whining at all, we've done pretty well, in spite of. It's just somewhat perplexing, thoughts?

Because they don't want to come here, obviously.
Cornerback isa high attrition position for Saban too. He has run several off for one reason or another. Just last season we had the top Juco corner and he quit Alonzo Lawerence is another one. Marlon Humphrey should be a really good one and I think Geno Smith will end up being a NFL player one day too.
I had actually forgotten about Zo Lawrence. Humphrey should be a good one, it seems Saban has only been able to pull the top rated cb's from in state for whatever reason. Just kind of odd, since every starting cb under CNS has gone on to the league. Agree on Geno too, seems to have a bright future ahead of him.
I was actually thinking about this the other day. Along with the whole Bama label/Saban personally coaching DB's (especially the CB's), I believe EVERY starting CB for us since he's been here was drafted/will be. You'd think we would have more talent/depth on the roster right now.
Averett/Stewart are both ridiculous athletes in this years class, so I wouldn't be surprised to see either turn into an elite corner. Cook and Smith are both solid prospects, but not truly elite coming out.
The good news is as of right now we have a chance to sign a pretty absurd CB class in '14. Humphrey, Watkins, Tabor, Tony Brown... good shot at landing at least a couple of those guys, all 5 star types.
Polished highschool CBs are rare and hard to find.
I think its a product of Saban and staffs very strict evaluations on the CB position. If you dont fit their "mold" of what an elite corner is you arent going to get an offer.
Also, on Geno Smith, watch next year. He may be our best corner by the end of next season. The mental aspect of the game seems to have clicked for him.
I think everyone will be very happy with Maurice Smith in due time.
This. The criteria to play corner at Bama restricts our numbers more than lack of interest. I would think we offer less corners relative to how many we play than any other position on team.
I think Cook is going to make the biggest impact at corner. The kids gonna kill it once he gets here.
Stewart will be a game changing safety tho
In the last 5 years Saban has pulled
Zo Lawrence (2nd rated corner in nation)
Fulton (3rd rated DB in nation according to composite)
I guess I'm just blown away by the expectations of some. 2 of the last 5 years we have landed the top DB in the nation. The years we didn't we land a 5 star athlete (scott) that was best projected at DB as well as the number 1 and a very talented 4 start DB (Belue who starts by the way) and in addition to that have landed the 3rd rated DB in his class to go along with another starter that is playing in the NFL (Menzie).
Agree. I think he is Kareem Jackson 2.0. He will do great IMO. Not flashy but will just lock his man down.
