WVUA Breaking News* UA President Guy Bailey is stepping down. Quote: "Today I have notified Chancellor Witt that I am stepping down as President of The University of Alabama. This is a decision my wife Jan and I made together after much discussion about how we can best address her health, which is the most important priority in our lives. By announcing this decision today, I hope the Board of Trustees will be in a position to take the next appropriate steps during its meeting in Tuscaloosa this week. We want to thank the faculty, staff, students, alumni and our many friends for your warm welcome. My family and I appreciate your understanding and your prayers."
Wow. That's shocking. Hope she is able to recover from whatever health issues she is facing. Prayers sent.

Some people doi not understand the difference between REAL Life and Messege boards....
This feels very strange to me... not stepping down to tend to his wife's health, that's very admirable and I pray she gets better and gets better quickly, but why was this not a concern when he took the job only 6 weeks ago? Has her condition deteriorated that much in a month and a half?
Sad to hear! Toughts and Prayers to his family
wow. Totally unexpected and shocking.
Statement from Paul Bryant, Jr., President Pro Tempore of The University of Alabama Board of Trustees:
We understand and respect that President Bailey’s priorities at this time must be focused on his wife Jan’s recovery. The Baileys are in our prayers and have our support. We will address the issue of presidential succession at The University of Alabama in a specially called Board meeting Thursday.
Statement from Dr. Robert E. Witt, Chancellor of The University of Alabama System:
I respect and appreciate President Bailey’s decision. His priorities reflect his commitment to both his wife Jan and The University of Alabama. He and Jan will remain in our prayers.

Yeah, that was my first thought after reading the statements. It definitely seems strange given he just took the job.

It's possible this was a position the family felt they could handle and later realized he was leaving both his work and his wife short on what they respectfully deserved so he took action.

Or this. I'm betting the President's job at UA takes up a lot more time than it does at Texas Tech. He might've thought he could still spend as much time with his wife as before but it wasn't going to be possible.
On a related note, are there any rumblings about who will take his place?
