I hope the tam is not as overconfident as some of the posters on message boards seem to be about both AU and Georgia. The worst thing that can happen to a person, organization, or team is overconfidence. It is great to be confident but must walk a fine line between confident in ability and not having respect for any opponent, be it in football or in any situation. I have been a BAMA fan since 1959 and have seen many great moments bu have also seen some not so great when it appeared we did not take an opponent as a serious challenge. We as fans and the media play can play an important part in building this feeling of overconfidence. It has not been as pronounced under Saban as in some previous coaching regimes. He reminds me of Coach Bryant in that respect in that he can get his team ready to play as well as anyone who has ever coached at Alabama. Roll Tide! I know I will get flamed for some of this, and yes, I do not post often but having watched and lived and died with the TIDE since my grandfather introduced them to me with the 1959 Liberty Bowl against Penn State I feel like I must state what I feel! Have a great day and a great Saturday!
The fans are not playing; it doesn't matter if we are overconfident.
What matters is that Saban keeps the team in check & he will. They have too much in front of them to play for in my opinion.
Probably ought to proof a little before posting but I get the point. If you are talking about Auburn I really don't think it matters. They will try to play us hard for a quarter but then we're gone. We overlooked them in 09' and it almost cost us the NC. But they are so bad this year. I think our subs could start the game and win.
Georgia is a different matter. I think they will be hyped and it has a chance to be the closest SECCG since 08'. If Murray is on target it will be a toss up. We have to get pressure on that kid. And AJ needs to have a good night. If not it will be a coin toss, imo.
Guys, Skipperville is right. We need to stop treating this is a win and hit the fan-practice field harder. And instead of posting on BOL, we should probably be studying more fan-film. You never know when the team might need us to yell "Run the fvckin ball" from the stands and our living rooms to remind them to, in fact, run the fvcking ball.
I agree with him to some extent. If you don't think the mood of the fans and the town can rub off on some of the players somewhat, I think you're wrong. That said, we as fans have very very little impact on the team.
One of the things I've learned during my time on Bol is that we absolutely affect the game by what we post
You are absolutely right. I'm sure Kansas State thought Baylor would be a high school team as well and we see what that got them. I hope the team doesn't read these boards because anyone that thinks Auburn cannot win and will bring their best is not realistic. Anybody can be beaten on any given day if the better team isn't ready. Much truth to what you said. I have been a Bama fan since 1969 and you never say it can never happen. RTR!
I didn't know what we post on a message board had effect on the game. Our overconfidence as fans has absolutely no bearing on the game, none....
Thanks for fanning to a standard. It's not who you watch, it's HOW you watch. You seem to have the team covered, I'll focus on yelling THROW A FKIN FLAG!!!! at the refs from my couch. Gotta keep those guys in line too.
Just to ease the OP's mind, I was extremely overconfident in 09, and 2011 and it worked out ok. And back in 92 I was young so I was really a cocky bastard back then. So that's definitive proof that fan overconfidence helps the team win. You're welcome.
I respectfully disagree with a couple of posts in this thread.
The players spend around 3 hours a day around the coaching staff. The rest of the 12-15 hours a day they are awake, they spend it around the student body, fans, and teammates. All they hear from the students and fans (and TV... ESPN) is how bad we're going to kill these teams and how Auburn has zero shot at winning.
Anyone listening to people tell them they have zero chance of losing for a full week can be a little dangerous, IMO.
Certainly not saying we are going to lose, but every opponent should be respected.
A little surprised at the responses here. Coming down hard the OP. I tend to err on the side of caution. And I realize that AU has struggled all year, but it is a rivalry game. Theyd love to ruin our season. Have we not forgotten about 2009? I haven't seen Wallace play, but I have to imagine he gives AU offense an added dimension similar to Manziel dual threat ability. SIMILAR not comparing.
And as far as Georgia goes. They are playing their best football, we are not at the moment.
Some serious grade of saw in this post.
sorry to say it, but after watching the team against LSU and TAMU, I don't think this particular version of Bama is NC ready. I believe we beat Auburn but lose to UGA in a close
high scoring game. The defense is just too young. JMHO, and I hope I'm wrong. We having to play just too many freshmen and depend on them. Sunseri is being asked to play in a position for which he is not a fit. Bama wins with defense and the defense is not NC quality
Just having a little fun with the guy I don't see anyone blasting him. Anyway nobody here is saying AU or especially UGA will be an easy game or assuming a win. We're just saying sometimes fans vastly overestimate their importance and role in the outcome of an actual game.
For the record, I think UGA will be a close game. If we lose to Auburn it won't be due to overconfidence, it would be due to the bus breaking down and the team missing the first 3 quarters. even then the game would be close.
Amazing isn't it? (sarcasm)
A lot of fans don't respect Georgia and I think that is a mistake. Uga has a lot of talent and can beat Alabama. Sure they are up and down but who is to say they wont play their a game against us ? If this happens, we better bring ours as well.
I'm sure they would love to ruin our season.
But have you seen their players?
No matter how much you think the fans do not influence the team, you can't be more wrong.
These players go to school, interact in social media, see around town...thousands of fans who are likely to tell them, "y'all gonna crush them" or this and that.
Couple their interactions with the media saying the same thing is a recipe for haughtiness.
These are kids we are talking about. Young men. It's harder to deflate the ego of a young man on a roll than anything else in the world. I do like hearing that Damian Square has addressed the team over being excited over this past weekend to the effect of "we haven't won a thing yet," but again, the egos of young men are quite excitable.

You overlook Georgia's struggles as well. It is true that Bama is not as dominant as our past 2 championship teams, but fortunately a dominant team as we have come to know it is not required to win it all this year. Dont forget that we are playing against a QB that folds like a cheap tent against quality competition, and got absolutely waxed by USCe. Georgia plays the same old man ball that Bama plays, and frankly Alabama is just better at it.
Seriously if we cover in this game this Auburn team is officially the worst SEC team ever in league play, think about that, think about how bad Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Kentucky, South Carolina have been through the years and then know that Auburn will have gone 0-8 in the league and the combined margin of losses will be the worst ever.
The only impact fans will feel from comments on a message board are the repercussions from other fans if their team loses. I know it doesn't seem like the right thing to do, but comments from fans has zero impact on a football team. Saban will have these boys ready and I can't imagine a scenario where the Bama players come in overconfident. If anything this BCS opportunity will help refocus this team. Pity Aubarn and Georgia.
