I personally think Grant will and should get another year but since a vocal majority will continue to call for his firing, please explain to me why the move to Pearl would be any different than the Petrino to the barn scuttlebutt two months ago? They both handled seemingly minor situations horrendously and it damaged their reputations badly and cost them their jobs. This board lit up with threads trashing aub for even considering Petrino and now we have multiple Pearl threads going here. I'd rather face having a mediocre program--or at least gamble that AG can somehow get it turned around--than stoop to the level where auburn has to play.
1,000% with you. At Alabama, class matters
Success > Class
Petrino was sleeping around on his wife, hired his mistress for a university job she wasnt qualified for so he could keep banging her on the sly, and paid her tens of thousands in hush money. And he lied to his boss about it.
Bruce Pearl had a kid over for hot dogs. And lied to the NCAA about it.
Yeah...those two things are nearly identical, bro.

You're comparing apples and pomegranates.
If I remember correctly, our patron saint of basketball Wimp Sanderson, had some issues as well.
I thought it was a pretty good comparison, not in the the exact circumstances of what they did, but more about how they both handled their situation poorly. I thought the way you explained it made that clear, but I guess not. And I agree with you. I think if the time comes to part ways with Grant, we could find a coach to bring a much needed spark to the program without that much baggage.
Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear.
I sincerely doubt we hire Pearl. I'd be for the move because I think someone is going to hit the jackpot with him and he's unlikely to run afoul of the NCAA ever again. He basically got put in coaching jail for 3+ years over lying about a cookout. You think he's ever going to jeopardize his career ever again? He knows the next time it happens, he's done. Forever.
Let's not act like all of our coaches are saints. Gottfried was rumored to be having some extracurricular fun his last couple years in town. Wimp beat the hell out of his secretary. Even Saban admits he "handled the Dolphins situation poorly" to steal your line from above.
I'm not equating all of these things, but coaches are humans. We aren't selling our soul by hiring someone who admits he made a mistake lying about a cookout at his house. Pearl didn't pay any players. He didn't abuse a woman. He's "done his time" so to speak for what, in retrospect, was a fairly minor offense.
Then again, I guess it's easier to sit on a high horse while our team dominates the NIT every year.
I have no idea who we should hire.
Bruce Pearl is vilified on this board, and I think the main reason is that he was the coach at Tennessee.
Very few people who know Coach Pearl or followed him think poorly of him. He is by all accounts a very good person as are most of the coaches. He has a very big personality and an ego to match it as do nearly every great coach.
Like I said before though I'm not sure who we should hire. The guy at Murray St had one good season but needs to prove he can build and maintain. Pearl proved he can win but in the dirty world of college basketball recruiting can he compete in a way that is needed to be successful after having served a show cause?
Both Pearl and Petrino lied and got fired/suspended for it. Outside of that I'm not sure they have any other comparisons. Outside of UT haters most people think extremely highly of Bruce Pearl as a person. Virtually no one speaks highly of Petrino, especially those that know him.
Ding ding ding...
Pearl is a great person, and would ignite the student body and fanbase like NOBODY has done---ever. I think what he could do here would even eclipse what the "Plaid Man" was doing back "in the day"...
1960 Les Paul
in this case i would love to have UTs sloppy seconds
