All of these top classes we're are putting together and to my knowledge I dont believe we've ever signed the nations #1 overall player. (not complaining here dont take this negatively) I just think its ironic that we never have, I also believe it speaks volumes to the job our staff does at putting together these stacked classes from top to bottom that are loaded with depth and not just "star heavy" just a thought, great time to be a BAMA fan!!!
Wasn't Julio the #1 ranked player in the nation?
That is ironic.
terrelle pryor that year
I think Julio was #3?
Think it's mostly because the "sexy" (or safe) pick by scouting services for #1 player in the nation has been DE's and QB's the last decade or so. DE's have been #1 the past 4 years. Think Bama gets recruited negatively for DE's because of the 3-4.
I think ESPN had him ranked number one.
"We're modern-day gladiators, and that mental toughness is really important to have in a good team." Nick Saban
Espn had Daquan bowers
"The #1 overall player" according to whom? Answer me that?
Nearly every Signing Day REC meeting I attend, whenever Saban speaks and then opens it up for questions, somebody will ask him about some "5-star player." And, just like clockwork, Nick tears into them because he doesn't subscribe to the star-rating system, let alone, the talent evaluations of Rivals, 24/7 and the like.
I have it on good authority that Julio Jones is the only player the Tide has signed under Nick to a grant in aide, who was the very top player on our board (this information is dated as of last year - this year may be an exception). Ironically, Mark Ingram was in Julio's class, and not at the top of the board. Yet, he won the Heisman Trophy.
You mentioned, "star heavy," the 2008 class was loaded with 'em: Ingram, Julio, Marcel, Dont'a, Courtney, Barrett, Barron, Cody. Amazing. Even more amazing, is that 2-Rivals 5-stars in that class, were complete busts at the University of Alabama: BJ Scott and Tyler Love. On the other hand, Cody (and maybe Darius) were Rivals 3-star players.
Really, that's weird. ESPN was running a commercial all week promoting RKs signing and it was showing past number one ranked kids and it showed JJ.
id assume this is right, this year nkimdeche was probably our top followed by Reuben Foster
Neither Courtney, Marcel, or Cody were "stars". We thought they were, knew they were, but they were not stars according to the majority of scouting services.
And whilst I agree with your message, it irks me when people (our own fans, nonetheless) spell our former or current players' names wrong. It's Marcel Dareus.

You mean MARCELL Dareus? I'm sorry but I think it is hilarious when a poster calls another out on something so petty as spelling, and then make the same mistake in their own post. RTR to you both though.
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
If memory serves, Marcell was raked a 3 star and the justification was that they did not think he was going to qualify due to grades and the star system (at the time at least) was partially based on how immediate a player would be expected to make an impact as well as overall ability. Since he was expected to go to JUCO, he was not expected to make an immediate impact, hence, 3-star. DeMeco Ryans on the other hand was a 3-star and made an immediate impact.
Crimsonbleeder "If Trent doesn't go pro this year I will eat my car tires"
I mean no offense, but I admit to being a recovering spelling & grammar Nazi, myself. What's ironic is that I make mistakes (spelling - only. God forbid I ever make a grammatical error!). So, in the spirit of keeping it real, I will go on the record to say, "I stand corrected on my misspelling of DAREUS."
With that out of the way, I will stand my my assertion that Marcell, Terrence, & Dont'a were all star players for the University.
who was the last #1 player to win a championship?
That commercial also showed Landon Collins selecting bama and he wasn't number 1 either.
Yep, you got me. Though I admit mine was a failure, it was more a failure to hit the "l" key a second time than it was a lack of knowledge. Ironic nonetheless!
