So it is a pretty well known adage at this point in time that you don't take running backs in the first round. Even as recently as a few years ago you might do it, but not any more. The league has changed too much and there are too many good running backs around in the second and third rounds. The exception to that rule is if an Adiran Peterson or a Trent Richardson is available.
So why is Eddie Lacy the only possible first round pick according to the experts? He is a good RB, and has good film against the best college defenses, but there are others too. I don't think he looks on film like a Richardson or a Peterson. Could the difference be that when GMs call Bama to ask about him, the guy they talk to is Cocah Saban? When Saban tells you the guy is worthy of a first round pick, you listen. When Mack Brown tells you how great his guys are, you ask for more game tape.
The reason lacy is the only first round pick, and probably a first rounder at all, is because lattimore went down. RBs are drafted so low now, I doubt two teams need a rb. The only exception could be if lattimore had been a top ten pick, which might have been possible. But unfortunately for him, that high mileage caught up. Why do you think we just signed 4 backs? Because those kids want lattimore's skills, but not his carries.
I think it's a weak draft at skill positions but Eddies YPC has always been impressive. If I'm watching film of EL compared to a lot of NFL backs, the value is there for a late first round pick. Half the NFL teams have made 3rd and 3 a passing down. Who else is there? Montee Ball and the others dint look like 1000 yard backs IMO. Think Eddie will get it done when healthy.
I've been saying for 2 years that Montee Ball is the most overrated RB/player in college football. 80% of his stats were garbage stats after his team was up by 20+ points.
Not sure Montee Ball would even be on our depth chart.
But...but Barry Sanders's record!
I remember watching the highlight reels of him when he was getting that ridiculous Heisman hype last year. Nearly every touchdown was from a few yards out with about 10 yards of open running room. I could have run for 20 touchdowns behind that line against that schedule. He was nothing but a product of a great offensive line and proved it when his YPC dropped by over a yard this year. The fact that he is getting no interest by NFL scouts tells you everything you need to know. Would have been a non-factor in the SEC.
latt would have been ahead of lacy but i dont even think he is a first rounder anymore
in this day and age of the passing nfl, a running back has to be an absolute freak to take in the first round. why not wait? the guy you would get in the second or even third round is not an entire round worse than who you could get in the top ten
Lacy is a great fit for a handful of teams....not a great fit for many others. His size and feet combo will work well in a downhill, Denver-type offense. He can pound.
So, if EL is the first RB chosen in this year's draft, we will have produced each of the last 3 first running backs selected.
I like this.
