It feels like I see true freshmen all over the field this year, but then I went through the commit list from last year, and it doesn't pan out. By my count, true freshmen who will not redshirt include:
DBelue (not a freshman, but a newcomer)
That's only nine players.
True Freshmen that, as far as I can tell, haven't played yet and should redshirt include:
That's 11, so I total 20 so far.
Others that either I can't remember if they've played or may have played just a couple of downs in one game include:
That gets me to 24. Then there is TDixon who left and BHill who hopes to be in in January. I know Lee, Ragland and Jones have all played, but Ragland is hurt and Lee might be. They might all still redshirt or might not. RAnderson, I just can't remember. Anyway, lots of players still redshirting as usual, especially some of the big boys. I guess at this point I wouldn't expect to see much change from the distribution above.
great work, and why in Saban's system, development of players is ALWAYS happening. We are always "young", because the big talent leaves a year early, but never "inexperienced"...that's all coaching, and why CNS is the best in the biz...
1960 Les Paul
Cyrus Jones played sparingly last weekend but thats the first I've seen him unless he got in against Arky.
Ragland played Saturday.
Yep we have played a lot and that speaks volumes for the future... Maybe we can win a National Championship before too long!!!
I don't believe Anderson has played either.

No offense meant to you... how could anyone not rememeber if Cyrus Jones has played after that electric catch and run Saturday?
I guess I wasn't clear in my thread. I know he played in the last game, he had one great catch from Sims and AJ threw at him once and it was incomplete, my comment was (and the same applies to Dillon Lee who had that interception in the earlier game), that I'm not sure if he has played in most every game, like a Smith or Devall, or if he has only played in one game. If he's only played in one game, he may still be eligible to redshirt, if he's played in most games, he likely won't. Like Lee, Cyrus is at a position where wer have the flexibiliby to go either way due to depth. With Smith, I might argue its much more important for him to get all all the snaps he can this year.
Once you play one snap in a game you are no longer eligible for a redshirt.
11 true freshman have played and 11 redshirt freshman. As someone mentioned, your original list plus Cyrus Jones, Reggie Ragland and Dillon Lee are the true freshman.
This is a great recruiting tool as it shows that freshman that work for it get the opportunity. I believe CNS will continue this trend. We have little to no reason to hold a freshman back unless they are simply not ready to play. As strong as our recruiting has been, Coach will push them through in 3-4 years to make room for fresh recruits. No need to hoard your treasures when more keep pouring in!
CNS is getting players ready for the next two years right now. Its pretty good to be a Tide fan right now.
No confusion at all in my post, you would have to provide the rule under which hanks gained additional year. The rule stated is straight from NCAA. There Is a separate rule dealing with a sixth year of eligibility don't know if that was hanks or not but I doubt he participated in 5 separate years without receiving medical hardship . But I could be wrong, probably am. Tidesports states he received medical redshirt for 2007 season. Another site states he received additional year under 14.6.2 a coaches documented misunderstanding of legislation the penalty was a 2 game suspension in 2011.
