your first choice when we fired Shula. Anybody man enough to admit you thought Rich Rod was what we needed? Anybody who wanted to let Coach Kines keep it? ANybody else?
I myself wanted Gruden...guess that's why Mal's the AD and I'm not...c'mon. Lets hear some people come clean.
Are you going to try and fck with my pension?
I knew I shouldnt mix business with Bama...
I'll be man enough and say I (a) didn't think Saban would come until very late in the hiring process and (b) liked what RR was doing at WVU and he was my top choice until, well, that whole fiasco.
Well instead of hiring Shula, I wanted us to let Kines Interim for a year then Hire Miles from OSU
For me it was Spurier or Saban. I would have been excited to have either one at the time.
I was still holding out for Jimmy Johnson.
I originally wanted SOS...and the thoughts of CNS were mildly disappointing---until I actually "checked him out"...and after Richrod dumped us. Then:
1960 Les Paul
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
Honestly I wanted Saban but didn't think we would get him.I knew when he came to Lsu from Michigan State that he would give us fits . When he took the dolphins job I was relieved. When I heard Coach Mal Moore had got him I was thrilled!! Shocked but thrilled! !!
Definitely wanted to have CNS as our coach but didn't think he would come here. I also remember the day that Bill Parcels' name was floating around. Gave both of 'em an equal shot at not coming. Wild ride to say the least.
^^^ This ^^^
I didn't think we had a shot early in the process.
My 1st choice was Spurrier. I really didn't have any other choices. I remember listening to Finebaum for a week or so teasing us that we had a very good shot @ landing him. When I saw Richrod had been hired, I was somewhat excited because he was doing really good @ WVU. I never thought we had a shot @ SABAN b/c he hadn't been with Miami but 2 years. As much as Mal Moore and company had screwed up for many years, they obviously have made up for it & then some.
^^^ THIS ^^^ ,,,Especially after our 3 previous hires of Fran, Price, and Shula. We were a brand name in a complete train wreck. I just didn't think we would land CNS but most would be lying if they said they weren't excited about the possibilty of Rich Rod based on our 3 previous hires. Seeing what Rich Rod did at Michigan it's easy to sit back now and say we didn't want or that we're glad we didn't land R. Rod. Facts are all he had to do was say "yes" and follow through with it and he would have been the coach at Bamaand still possibly could be. That being said I'm glad we got CNS and yes I would have chosen CNS over RRod if I thought we could have definantly got him.
Honestly I loved kines he was all bama. But I was extremely excited to get Saban. I was also worried to get burnt by him for the first two years. I ve followed him closely since his time at bama and seems to love college football more than anything and seems to feel at home and ready to stick it out till retirement at bama. I have no doubt in my mind that he will stay at bama till he retires now.
He was my first choice, but I will admit that I wasn't thrilled about waiting that long for him to possibly turn us down. I was excited about RR and would have loved to have SOS at the time, but always hoped it would be Saban.
When Saban was hired I told one of my good friends (an aub) that we would win a title within the first 3 years, two titles within 5, and if he stayed 15-20 years that he would match coach Bryant with 6 or more. My friend thought I was delusional but CNS hasn't made a lire out of me yet.
I wanted Spurrier just because I didn't think there was any way we could get Saban.
I will be honest that I did not think we could get coach Saban. I just was happy with some of the names I was hearing including Coach Saban. Just damn glad we got him.
I can remember going to gatlinburg and trying to keep up with the hiring rumors by phone with a buddy of mine. I think it was a friday that rich rod turned us down, but the bad cell coverage up there was so frustrating and had no internet service, f#$@#% up my whole weekend. I had gotten my expectations up of having a high powered offense, kinda felt the same about mike price, but damn I'm glad we got CNS. But I'm man enough to admit wanting rr because I didn't think Saban would come. How far we have come. RTR
