Ok ... you said be honest ... so I will be. Because he was doing things clean and I liked him as I person, I was actually pulling for Shula to turn things around. I know it would have been TERRIBLE to give him 5 more minutes, but I just like the guy.
But, as current events this week have shown us, nice guys their heads caved in and Sith lords like Saban are what's needed to f up the entire rebel alliance.
So, I was honest, so don't -1 into the dirt!
Always alway Saban. Didnt think he was available or MM had the nuts to get him.
I really wanted Saban. I never thought he would take the job at Bama. After the RR crap, I worried when we went after Saban because Bama has higher standards than striking out on two coaches.
Never Gets Old
Check your records and you'll see my signing day with BOL was the day Saban's hiring was announced. I'd begun to lose hope for our program and knew we needed someone with the balls to put the boosters and alumni in their places. Saban was the only one.
Roll Freakin' Tide.

I wanted Paul Johnson. I love his offense but obviously I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out.
Roll Tide to Her
I was watching Iowa St at the time. I just knew that we should go after Gene Chizlick from Iowa St. He had very impressive record with the Cyclones. I knew that he was the most religious person in the universe and had God on his side...So I figured that would be cool. I also wanted to see all of our coaches touring the state in bowling shirts while impressing recruits in a jacked up rented limo with flags on the side. I felt that we needed a coach that dresses well with cool leather jackets like my childhood hero, "The Fonz" I also fel that we needed someone who could sport the new Shackets that everyone is talking about these day..
I guess we had to settle on Coach Saban (G)
Gary Neil Drummond , a trustee , was vehemently opposed to CNS and the big contract . He was
very vocal about it which pissed me off . So tifwiw , when you see these super rich types that think
they know everything , they don't . Drummond might be a great coal man , but that doesn't mean
he know's jack about anything else .
Sorry I am on my soap box . Gates and Warren Buffet do the same thing . Offering their unsolicited
opinions up . No one is right all the time . Going back to Buffet ( who I like btw ) . He is the best
stock man in history , yet , Berkshire has grossly underperformed in the last decade . He is an athiest ,
a very nice one it seems , don't think he is right on that one either , Sorry for the rant . RTR
got to admit I was a little excited when the rumor came out that SOS had bought farm land near ttown, but I always wanted him or Saban.
The only time I ever went into a game knowing Bama had no shot to win was when Saban brought one of his LSU squads to T-Town(I forget the year). I looked at them then looked at us and knew. When he went to the NFL I thought there may be a chance one day. When the rumors started circulating(after Cecil Hurt wrote the article that helped restore Bama football) I clung to the hope that it was a real possibility. I was sick to my stomach when it was becoming apparent that RR was the choice. When that went south and we kept holding out, I knew he was who we were banking on. Never bought the Spurrier crap. In short, I wanted him to be our coach from the 1st time he made me submit as a Bama fan.

Rumor was les miles wanted the job before we hired Shula. I heard rumors after we fired Shula that Steve had agreed but guess that was not true. Then I was excited about rich because he was a hot coach at the time. However it really worked out in the end!
I didn't think Coach Saban would jump...at the time...
But I was always impressed with Coach Saban from his time at Michigan State...
I was pumped when we got him!
There was a large contingent of fans who not only thought we could not get Saban, but that he wasn't that good anyway. These fans saw two 10+ win seasons, two 8 win seasons, and one 9 win season at LSU. I hate to say it, but TR made this exact point in a post.
Other posters took it further than TR and said that all of the Saban backers were silly and delusional.
