With Matthews staying, out of curiosity, I looked at their depth chart to see what they are losing. It's a lot.
- 3 out of 4 listed starting receivers
- 2nd string RB (their only listed big back, Christine Michael)
- Starting LT and likely top 5 overall pick
- Starting Center (Matthews brother listed as backup at 260 pounds)
- Both starting safeties
- 2 of 3 starting LB's
- 1 of 2 starting DT's (Neely, the one that gave Barrett trouble)
- Stud DE Moore (his listed backup is 205 pounds)
They have some holes to fill.
I've looked at this as well. It's hard to imagine their defense not taking a little step backwards, but ya just never know I guess.
They will be able to replace their WRs imo, especially with the incoming class (Sealy-Jones & Griffin). The loss of Joekel will definately hurt. I expect Matthews to move to LT (at least that's what his older brother Kevin told me). For what its worth.....all the brothers and father Bruce think Mike is the best of them all.
I'm so glad we get them early. It will be Manziel's first big "limelight" game, coming off an absolutely crazy offseason and heisman year. And Saban will have worked all summer in preparation. And ya know, the pressure in this game (for once) may actually be on TAMU...... trying to defend their home turf with the defending heisman and top 5 ranking.

On the receivers, Griffin isn't expected to qualify, and Sealy-Jones, from all I've heard, is very unnatural at receiver and doesn't run routes well, so he may even be a TE or DE. They will definately miss what Swoope brought to the table. He is a savy receiver.
Thanks for the post and inside info from the Matthews. What a football family.
I agree with all of the above but I think the pressure will be more on us. I can't see the pressure being on anyone else, no matter who we play for quite some time. I especially agree on the getting them early after a crazy off-season being a good thing. It should be a good game though. I expect A&M to be #2 in all of the SEC for a while.
definately agree. It's extremely difficult to replace leadership, and it looks like they lose a majority of their 2012 season leaders (Swope inparticular). Swope was a very reliable 3rd down receiver, that had a good handle of where to be on the field when Manziel started scrambling.
no problem. Speaking of the Matthews, Bruce (the dad and Titans o-line coach) is in love with Warmack and calls him the best collegiate guard he's seen since coaching. Matthews has been in Munchak's ear to draft Warmack with the Titan's 10th overall pick. Keep this in mind as April's draft rolls around......and LG is among the 2-3 positions the Titans are trying to fill (along with rush end and strong safety).
Awesome, thanks for the scoop! +1
There's a lot of blood, sweat, and guts between dreams and success.
It's possible that Warmack and Barrett are the Titans first and second round picks. Jim Wyatt (Titans beat writer) thinks they plan to overhaul all three interior OL positions, and they draft in about the right spot to nab both. 10 overall and 42 overall. However, Barrett's draft position seems to fluctuate a lot depending on who is evaluating so he could be gone by then.
And as Jlee05 said, they also need pass rush and safety help. It would be cool to see them play on the same OL in the NFL, though.
I don't see A&M being as good next year. The biggest problem is that SEC defenses will have film to prepare for. Sumlin was new to the league and so was Manziel. After an offseason to prepare I believe they will inevitably decline. Plus, they are not going to be near as good on D IMO.

Can't wait for that game! We always seem to be prepared and play well for our first big game of the season. I don't mean to imply VT will be a cupcake, but they are not what they once were. aTm will get a lot of prep time from our staff and tram over the break.
