I just read an artical about Tommy Frazier and his run at Nebraska from 94/95. He was asked the question about how his teams and teh Nebraska run from 94-97 compared to the current Alabama run. Frazier says that without question his Nebraska teams would beat the Alabama teams and that his 95 team would beat anybody. While I will say that those were really good teams during that time frame I do think that our 09 and 11 team would beat his 95 team because of the defense and Saban as the coach.
Our teams would b built to stop them...
I think the size and speed of today's players would allow us to win the game. But that team was BIG and strong and physical. They absolutely spanked a really good Florida team that had beaten the pants off every SEC team that year.
We might win due to the evolution of the game, but that team was better vs their era and competition than any team in the modern football era. They were up by 25+ vs every team they played that year. A couple scored late to make the games look closer, but they never even had a close game by the early part of the 3rd quarter. And they played a tough schedule too.
I love the triple option. That being said, it is close to worthless in a bowl game scenario due to the long period between the end of the season and the bowl game. If bama were to play Nebraska in this hypothetical scenario, Saban would have a month or so to prepare. I know there was a long off period when Frazier was there, but things have changed a lot, and Saban is Saban.
cant really expect him to say anything else
he is wrong, though
95 Nebraska was incredibly good but I think the best college football team of all time was 2001 Miami. That team was loaded to the gills with NFL players. The size and speed of today's game would shock Nebraska of 95 but they were really great during that time period. No doubt about that. The Big Red Machine was scary good. Everyone knew they were running option but no one could stop them. I couldn't imagine how tough their practices were. Tom Osborne is one of the greatest coaches of all time.
Discussed this topic with someone within the last week and going back looking on those Nebraska teams, I didn't realize how many NFLers they had.
****I think the 2009 team would have the best chance to beat them considering the gauntlet that team went through, including giving Florida and Texas their only losses on the season.
-Few more guys made the NFL. In total they had about 30 guys that played in the NFL.
-Considered the best college team of all-time by many polls.
-Closest game the 1995 team had was a 23 point win at #7 Colorado
-Beat undefeated #2 Florida 62-24 in the Orange Bowl. Florida's closest wins that season were 11 points wins at #7 Auburn and an 11 point win over #6 Florida State
-Nebraska had a pervasive steroid problem within the team from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. Several former players during that period including Dave Rimington, Dean Steinkuhler admitted to juicing.
-The mid 1990s Nebraska teams are the only teams that I've seen where the lineman wore cutoff jerseys because they had flat stomachs. Really hard to be 300-310 pounds with a flat stomach in your early 20s and not be juicing.
Who are the top 10 college football teams of all time?

That settles it. Warmack was obviously juicing.
Disagree wholeheartedly about the 2009 team having the best chance. Yes, they played the toughest schedule no doubt but there were several games where the outcome was still in doubt late in the game. 2011 Bama absolutely dominated everyone except for LSU I. And even that night it was very obvious that Bama was better than LSU.
As a matter of fact LSU 2011 is a perfect example of the point I am trying to make. That team ran the gauntlet on one of the toughest schedules of all-time. They beat Bama at Bama. Considering all of this they were still an underdog in the rematch because "How you win" is just as important as who you beat.
Lol. I said they had "flat" stomachs.
With less than 20 calendar days to prepare, the '09 and '12 Bama teams wouldn't beat the '95 Huskers. That option was ridiculous due to the athletes and the offensive line that Nebraska had.
The '11 team would have a chance due to the defense but you saw what Georgia Southern accomplished and they didn't have Phillips and Frazier. Problem with the '09 team is Hightower was injured. Freshman LB against the '95 Huskers? IDK about that..
You don't see the six pack?
Umm hate to break it to yall, but 95 Nebraska would beat pretty much every team in history. They averaged 400 yards rushing per game and beat down what some consider Spurriers best UF team by 40 points.
They were on another level than any great team in history. Even 2001 Miami, who struggled against some crappy teams that year even with loads of NFL talent. 95 Nebraska wiped the floor with every one. Closest game was a 14 point win where they were up 35-7 in the 4th.

like the GA Southern game in 2011?
size is not as important when you run the scheme to perfection and 95 nebraska was plenty big. plus they had the greatest option QB of all time
Considering our starting DL (chapman and jessie williams) sat the game out...we had a thord string nose playing and I think he got hurt early.
Not an excuse but inexperience will kill u against an option team.
Sitting 2 starters is no excuse for giving up over 300 yards to an FCS school. Our defense dominated every single team in 2011, except the triple option attack of the mighty Georgia Southern Eagles. There's no question that the '95 Nebraska had far superior talent compared to the 2011 Georgia Southern team. Anyone saying that Alabama would flat out dominate that Nebraska team has no idea what they're talking about.
I would take Bama and Coach Saban
We didn't even prepare for Georgia Southern. It was sandwiched in between the Miss. State and Auburn games that year. Yes they put up some big numbers against us but I seriously doubt the coaches really cared as long as we won (and we did, winning 45-21). Plus we had guys out due to injury and suspension. That game is meaningless to me in the scheme of things.
It's the exact reason. Stopping the option has nothing to do with talent, it's knowledge and experience... especially in the dl. Throw freshman five stars out there and they'll get rolled.
It was three starters. And it may not be an excuse but lets look at just one play. Fr Pagan is in the game and fails to take the dive on the option. I think that was about a 70 yard td play. 70 yards in one chunk cuz a Fr didn't take the dive, how much simpler does it get. And after that the lbs were slow to take the option because they were checking to make sure the DL took dive.
Defending the option is just the same as running it. Everyone has a job and if one person fails to do their part it all falls to crap. Its about timing and trust. And it starts from the inside on the DL. Having all those starters out made a huge difference.
If our 2011 guys were prepared correctly and put in the right scheme, they have a good chance of making a game of it.
"We're modern-day gladiators, and that mental toughness is really important to have in a good team." Nick Saban
Who wants a six pack when you can have keg instead??
so we had 2 starters out that game?
well, GA Southern had an entire team of players not 1 team in the SEC wanted. they are FCS and put up over 300 yards rushing on us that day.
If we played 95 nebraska that day instead, they would have easily beat us down with over 500 yards rushing.
the fact is 95 nebraska is the best team of all time in college football. sure, some other teams might hang with them, but they would be favored over every single team in history.
Gentry didn't play either. We didn't prepare for that game either. We would have made a game of it with those Nebraska teams. Keeping a team from crossing the 50 yard line is also unheard of. We did that. We had a great defense.
But if you can clog up the middle against the option with your base starters and don't have to give extra help you then can scheme to stop the edge attack. If you can't stop the freaking dive then yes you have problems. Pagan gave up a huge 70 td play because he failed to take dive. Losing your entire starting middle DL guys really hurt that day. Not preparing for it also hurt us. I don't know if we would win a game vs that Nebraska team but it wouldn't have been a blowout either like you're saying.
