Tubby lands at Texas tech.
Yeah this is not the career trajectory one should follow.
Assistant to Tulsa: Big break
Tulsa to Georgia: going in the right direction
Georgia to Kentucky: I have arrived
Kentucky to Minnesota: just a bump in the road...right?
Minnesota to Texas Tech: oh shit, this isn't the right direction that I am heading right now.
I'm still amazed at the posters who jumped all over me for saying Tubby isn't a great coach.
With everything said, that's a terrific hire for Texas Tech IMO. He can evaluate and make them competitive again.

Hell I am amazed that last week some on here were clamoring for Tubby over Grant.
Grant isn't perfect and could very well get canned next year. But I will take him over what Tubby has shown. Heck he has a losing record in the Big 10 (don't care how good a conference it is, and it is good, that is crappy), he never won a NCAA game at Minnesota until this year, and never took them to anything above a 10 seed in his time there.
If ever the "he won a NC with another guy's players" label applied it would be with Tubby. I don't see why everyone is so taken by him at this point in his career.
Considering the downvote I received, I'd say they're reading this thread and being bitter.
Tubby is a good fit for Texas Tech.
That said, it's Texas freaking Tech. They have zero basketball tradition.
I would rather have Tubby Smith than Steve Alford. Just sayin'.
Alford at NM has had very good to some great regular seasons. He has even brought home some championships. Granted even though the MWC is good it isn't the Big 10.
Tubby has brought home average or slightly above average regular seasons at UM, with no championships.
Both have sucked in the tourney which is all that matters to many.
So I will take Alford who can recruit better then Tubby also. But neither is perfect.
Feels like choosing between expired ham and expired turkey.
Just me, but I would take Tubby over Alford.
Of course, Alford now has his opportunity to truly shine.
I disagree Tubby has sucked in the NCAA Tournament.
Take out the Kentucky years in which he was 21-9. He went Sweet 16 twice at Tulsa, Sweet 16 once at Georgia, but didn't do as well at Minnesota (which I believe is a tough job in the current landscape of the Big 10 and nationally).
So he is 7-7 with three Sweet 16's other than his years at Kentucky at Tulsa, Georgia and Minnesota.
28-16 in his career with an NC, 4 Elite 8's and 9 Sweet 16's in 22 seasons. He took a team to the Sweet 16 in 3 of the 4 schools he coached.
He has taken teams to the NCAA Tournament in 17 of his 22 years as a HC.

Alford is 6-7 in the NCAA Tournament all time. He has been to the NCAA Tournament 7 times in 18 years as a HC at Southwest Missouri State, Iowa (he left before he was about to be fired) and New Mexico.
That is fair, I am just looking at what you are getting right now. You are getting the Tubby you have seen at Minnesota, not the young Tubby you saw at UGA or Tulsa or the Tubby that had the weight of a basketball blue blood behind him. That is why I only mentioned those years at Minnesota.
I think he is an average coach overall.
With Alford he had to start producing in the NCAA. He is young enough to change and modify his approach. If he doesn't then that will be a shame. He has done very well at NM and had mixed results at Iowa. This UCLA job will be his biggest chance to prove he is a big time coach when given the resources.
Hell...look how old Steve Fihser is right now. & he's putting San Diego St. in the tourney every year. There is a ton of older seasoned basketball coaches around the nation currently.

They had to hire him to keep their Tubbs quota...tuberville left so had to be replaced

I don't mind old coaches. I Mind old coaches that are lazy at recruiting and seem to choke in the 2nd half of the season. They is Tubby at UM.
