I know I am going to get bashed and everyone is going to say look at his overall record and 2 NC's and undefeated record at Ohio State, but I still think he is the most overrated coach in the nation. He can't handle losing. Goes to Utah when Alex Smith was already there (didnt have to recruit him). Leaves Utah and goes to Florida and wins his first national championship because of a heavily talented defense that he DIDNT recruit. He then has one of the top 10 college football players of all time land right in his lap; and yes Tim Tebow was always going to Florida no matter who the coach was there so dont tell me that was Meyer recruiting him. Without Tebow during the three years after the first national championship Florida likely average 8 wins a season tops. He then loses Tebow for his last year at Florida and goes 8-5 with about 3 20+ point losses and retired due to supposed heart problems (we all know the real reason he retired). Suddenly, a year later, he is suddenly healthy enough to coach again and has the Ohio State jobs just waiting for him on a silver platter (with another former #1 overall duel threat QB on it again that he didnt recruit). Worst year ever for the Big 10 conference and Meyer barely beats every garbage team he played to go 12-0. Sorry but the guy is overatted in my books. When he actually stays at a school 5+ years, wins consistently with and without his recruited players and is able to win when he doesnt have the best duel QB in the nation sitting in his laps, then I might change my opinion, but not until then.
I think you're right and have said the samething in the past. He is a bitch and can't handle losing.
Yes maybe overrated as widely considered the #2 coach behind saban. But he is still top 5. Who do you take ahead of him?
I dont know, but the biggest difference between he and lot of the other great coaches is the other great coaches actually went in when a school was in the dumps. Look what Butch Davis did in Miami after they had been in the dumps for a long time. Look what Pete Carroll did at USC after they had been in the dumps for a while. Look at what Bob Stoops did at Oklahoma after they have been in the dumps for a long time. Look at what Nick Saban did at LSU and has done at Alabama.
Urban Meyer walked into Ohio State and Florida when they were loaded with talent and won with former coaches players and without Tebow his record at Florida is a lot worse. He hasnt built a program up that either was already there to begin with or he hasnt gone to a school that was in the dumps and brought them back. Once he loses his best players or gets his ass kicked a couple of times, he leaves (look at Florida). The same thing will happen at Ohio St.
I agree with one of your points but not the other. He obviously has severe issues with not being able to handle losing. I'm sure we've all heard the stories of him closing himself in a dark room and refusing to come out after a loss. The one I don't agree with is your statement he can't recruit. Their is pretty strong evidence he can definitely do that. His classes are highly ranked every year.
A lot easier for him to win the Big10 than win against the coaches in the SEC. He will OWN the Big10 but will not win the NC there. For the next few years it can be called the Big Urban Conference. tOSU will be in Pasadena next January 6th. JMO guys.
I didnt say he couldnt recruit, just saying he is overrated and I am not just looking at his record. He won his first national championship at Florida because of a stout defense he didnt recruit. Tebow had a lot of talent with him as well, but I watched a lot of Floridas games and without Tebow they lose 3 more games per season because he single handly cared that team by himself at times (my point about the recruitment was Tim Tebow was always going to Florida no matter who the coach was there.
Notre Dame by 3 is all you need to know about Urban. Send him back to the closet.
a sore loser indeed, I can't stand to even watch the guy on tv anymore after his disrespect of Saban/Bama by not giving us due credit the other night
Sore loser but a good recruiter and solid coach.
Richt and brown are the most overrated.
- Mack Brown is the most overrated coach in America by a mile.
- Urban Meyer has left EVERY PROGRAM in better shape than it was when he got there.
- When you discount his titles because he had a great player, your argument really loses any credibility.
- Tim Tebow wasn't always going to Florida regardless of the coach.
His mom begs to differ with you on that one. Tebow wanted to go to Alabama, but his mom kept him and was always going to keep him in Florida.
And Jim Cheesehead won a national championship with one great player and had he been there 4 years probably would have won another, but do you think Cheesehead is a great coach?
In 5 years he will be out of a job.
Urban left UF in bad shape. Talent was down, a QB not named Tebow was never developed, and by Muschump's own comments in his first year they were a soft team that couldn't compete with the physical play of Bama and LSU. This was just 2 years removed from a NC. Urban didnt leave UF in any better shape than Zook did. Muschamp is still cleaning up the mess Urban left behind.
I have lived in Florida for about 14 years...I think you are correct. I know he had it made in shade when Bama was down, FSU was going through t Bowden years in decline as well as Miami. When Saban came to Bama..he was not a happy camper, I'll tell you that. the Florida fans and people hated us, literally. BTW I was watching the BCS game replay. When halftime came, Chris was talking to Meyer and Desmond Howard. Chris asked Meyer what ND needed to do to come back, etc I laughed to myself looking at his smug self..thinking about his picking Notre Dame by a field goal & listened to him say that our offensive line was dominating their defensive line, DUH! That Notre Dame had to start dropping back a safety in order to compete and help with the play action passes. Just as soon as he said that, Desmond sort of leaned towards him and put both his hands on his shoulder and said something similar to, "That's exactly what they cannot do"...If they drop back a safety, then you gotta a huge worry about #9, #83 and all the other fantastic receivers. Urban looked like, as Desmond was talking, like he had sudden abdominal pain..HAHAHAHAHAHA I've never liked him at all. I know he's good on offense, etc...buttttt...he's just so smug!!

If you can't differentiate between Meyer and Chizik, I'm sorry.
And if you cant differentiate the difference between Florida with and without Tebow, then I am sorry as well. Look at Meyer's final year at Florida. Now, taking that into account, tell me what you think his record woudl have been the previous three years had Tebow not been on that team?

It killed Meyer to compliment Bama or Saban in anyway. He made excuses for Notre Lame. He has zero integrity and class. Bama would've beat his overrated OSU team by 30+ .
if cns had stayed at LSU and continued there for the long haul(happy he didnt) meyer would have been a non factor in the sec.
Choose not a life of limitation
So we've summarized Urban needed great players to win, cool. Now go ahead and compile me a list of coaches that have won BCS titles WITHOUT great players.
I guess I'll just argue Julio Jones and Rolando McClain would have wound up at Alabama regardless of who the coach was and therefore Saban wouldn't have won the 09 title without them, thus clearly making Nick Saban overrated too.
And if you think having great players on your roster automatically guarantees you titles without any coaching necessary, go ask FSU USC UGA OU Clemson and Texas how they've fared lately.
I hope we play OSU for the NC next year. I want to process his pansy a$$ again. What kind of BS excuse will he come up with to leave football this time?????
Yeah UF was better after he left? Sorry but I'll disagree with you there, it goes with my point of his recruiting looks good on paper.
