Would be happy to drop 1941 if they would give us one we should have had. I am still pissed Notre Dame and Michigan State played to a tie and we were undefeated and they gave the championship to the choir boys.
The 1941 Alabama Crimson Tide football team finished the season with a 9-2 mark, a 3rd-place finish in the Southeastern Conference title race, and a #20 ranking in the Associated Press poll.
The club was credited with a National Championship by the "Houlgate System", a mathematical ranking system devised by Carroll "Deke" Houlgate of Los Angeles, California and syndicated to newspapers between 1927 and 1958. That title is one of the twelve championships claimed by the school's sport's information office, and is by far the most controversial of the school's championship claims. It has been justified because the Houlgate System was the more established and respected selector at the time (as recognized by NCAA historians) and because Alabama played a longer season and more respectable opponents than other teams with claims.
We lost to Miss. St. and Vandy that year in the regular season.
Is that saying the Houlgate System was more established and respected than the AP Poll at the time?
Who awarded it to us?
My interpretation is yes. Personally, it wouldn't bother me at all if we were to drop the '41 claim. Since we didn't win either one of the established polls in '66, I don't want to see us claim it.
Probably a troll thread, but who cares? The way I see it, 3 teams could claim '66 so it evens out. It's not like this stuff is precise. Besides, it makes for a good story for college football fans who think we have numerous crazy title claims, but really it's just the one in 1941. Roll Tide. Beat everyone.
I still say we should have claimed 1945 over Army instead of '41 or '66. We were screwed in '66 and '77 but it is what it is.
And cave to the barner BS? I think we should let the School decide that.
It's no sweat off my balls if the university decided to drop it.
<. As long as Saban's running things, this is how the Tide Rolls!
I down voted, and it's because this is just a rotted horse that is still being beaten.
Sure, it's controversial and can be argued either way but the comparison is laughable.
In the BCS era there is only one way to win and that is to WIN. Even claiming an AP title if its split is stupid.
And for the life of me I'll never understand why any of us would want to give back a championship.
I'd give you -100 if I could.
"Nobody makes me bleed my own blood, nobody!"
Us claiming 1966 or 1977 would be like the Aubs claiming 2004. It would be pathetic.
It undermines the rest of them. Everyone has gotten screwed a couple of years ('66 and '77 for us), but we have been fortunate too ('64 and '73) for when and what the votes were.
DROP THIS BS TITLE-- I don't care how respected Houlgate was AT THE TIME, after 73 years to look back on the season, no two loss team should be claiming it was the National Champ.
I'll take 14 solid ones over 15 in which "half of them are bullsh*t." Any PR repercussions for dropping it would be short lived. Anything with 15 on it, until we win another one, is stupid because of this title.
1941 is a joke; it makes us look foolish
It was over 70 years ago...who cares
It's the offseason, chief. People are having a discussion on a message board. Don't get so offended.
