Futbol stadiums in Europe can be half the capacity and generate twice the noise because the seats are all covered and the sound gets trapped phenomenally. Plus they don't have pointless cheerleaders, they take it upon themselves to create atmosphere. I wish we could do the same.
Ratio of drunks to non drunks higher IMO
A Drunk = 12-15 dB increase and 25% increased rate of obnoxiousness, creating perfect storm of sound generation.
In this way, fraternity section leaving in 3rd Q drastically alters the drunk v non drunk ratio. This could be caused by
A. A need to move the next challenge,like getting into panties of (hot) chic date while she is still conscious;
B. a need to move to the next challenge, like ditching the (not hot) chic date while you still have time to salvage the weekend;
C. Fail on the pacing and is either passed out, throwing up or some other means of disrupting the non-drunk advantage over the grandpas with their grand kids telling the fan in front of them to please sit down.

+1 for an MLS reference on BOL. Sounders and Timbers' stadiums blow BDS away in terms of noise to fan ratio
Acoustics and stadium design play a part, but this ^^^ is all that really matters. I also live in the PacNW and it is just an entirely different atmosphere. FTR, I posted earlier that old people played a part. I'm not hating on old people attending games. The fact we have a tradition that bred the older fans is one way in which we are far superior to most of these Pac12 jabronis. I hope to be at games when I am 90; I just won't be the crusty hag behind you telling you to sit down. I'll be banging my walker up against the seats.
My wife and I went to U2 concert there a couple years ago and my ears rang for a week. I saw them at 3 other stadiums on that tour and there was no comparison.
