Could You Make the Call to Justin Taylor?

  • TalHawkins112 said...

I could do it, but I wouldn't put it like that.

I would explain that it was in his best interest to greyshirt. That yes, the numbers was also a reason we'd like him to greyshirt but his injury was the main one. Because he wouldn't be able to compete as well for PT this year coming off the injury, it makes more sense for him to greyshirt and come in next year. And then, honestly it would be smart to redshirt that year and come in in 2014 as a RSFR competing with Yeldon and Drake for #2 behind Hart.

Then he would have plenty of time to have experience, recover from his injury, and come in at a time the depth chart was more favorable relative to guys who have been in the system as long as he has.

That is if Alabama doesnt bring in another couple of top flight rb's which they probably will ie Scarborough. Kid could get stuck down in the depth chart and eventually transfer to UNA or USA etc. Or he could come in outwork everyone and be a stud. Who knows? JT should really take this opportunity to evaluate his decision.

Another take ... More balanced, semi complementary of cns on the issue of eventually honoring the commit. Also, note in the article that folks are not banging down his door to get him to switch due to the knee.

    nice find........thanks for sharing.

See, that is the problem with the agenda driven article. If the agenda would have been the reverse, it could have read:

Alabama doesn't back off injured North Georgia athlete -

Justin Taylor of North Atlanta High School has been committed to Alabama since last February. Entering his senior season, The 5-foot-11, 208-pounder was considered to be one of the top athletes in the state of Georgia. However, in August, a knee injury ended his senior year before it began. The phone calls and recruiting pitches from college coaches came to a grinding halt. Such is the world of big time college football. Fortunately for Justin, Alabama is honoring their offer. The Crimson Tide coaches informed him 2 weeks ago that they will still sign him to a full scholarship in the 2013 class...etc

send that to Scarbinsky and see if he'll do a write up on it. :) that would be way cool - I like how you wrote that, very well done in deed.

maybe you should be a journalist - if you aren't already.

I'm just curious how many of you could make the call to tell the kid two weeks before signing day to tell him he went from the 7th to 26th commit?

Given the situation concerning his injury, and considering it would be best in his AND the team's best interest, yes, I could very easily make the call. Remember that college football is a business, a very lucrative business, and just like in any other job, you have to do what is generally best for your business. I really hate it for the young man and hope he gets to live his dream to play ball at Bama, just not this year.

I guess Shane thinks Yeldon will flip to Bama after he enrolls at Auburn. Brilliant. Sell those subscriptions, BOL.” - TIGER

  • I think this way over blown, he was given a 4 week notice from my accounts. And take a poll and ask how many kids would wait 6 months for a full ride and play for one of the premier programs in the country.

He was given a 4 week notice? The reality is this happens sometimes and it is not fair to the recruit, regardless of the school involved. I guess you are saying we were doing the right thing by telling him 4 weeks before signing day that he couldn't come in with this class? If you spring this on a kid this late in the game it is wrong.

Think about this: If he were your son, how would you feel? Probably not too happy unless you were told up front that this was a possibility.

You can still be a true Bama fan and admit that we may not have handled this the best way.

  • Mike Shula grey-shirted John Parker Wilson and Drew Davis and they turned out ok.

  • I would imagine that Taylor was told somewhere along the line that it was possible his offer would be changed from regular to grayshirt. He did not find out until a couple of weeks ago that that was differently the case.

I'd be OK calling him at 2AM, then telling him to hold on halfway through the call, and make him listen to me give the Taco Bell drive-in a 68-item order to cater a party I was having in a cheap motel.

    ..............that made me spit Sprite

Heck of a post Cuthbert. This is exactly right, but that story don't sell newspapers anywhere but north and west of I-20 in the State of Alabama. Other fan bases and their writers look for every chance to take a jab at us, and especially Coach Saban.

    Piss.......on......them....end of story.

Now go sell a car and get off the computer......

  • Do I think this is perfect or great for Taylor? No.

I wish we could have told him earlier then what we did (note I believe he said we called him 2 weeks ago to tell him hence he would have 4 weeks). I do however like it better then what LSU did last year which was tell the kid after he was already enrolled.

But put into the same spot as Saban, yes I would do it. Saban is doing what he feels is best for the program he is paid to lead. Every coach must follow that mandate and do what is necessary, no matter how akward or messy it might be. The name of the game is winning and I assume Saban is doing what he feels gives him the best chance to win. It is why coaches get fired for a losing record or not winning enough, despite how high their graduation rate is or any other factor other then winning.

They said he was called 2 weeks by coach rumph before his OV, so im counting those weeks and the weeks till signing day is close to 4 weeks. BTW you actually have more time past sighning day. And I dont think I would be to bothered as I understand the nature of the biz. Every year when we had final meeting to meet with coach, we were there to see if our scholly would be renewed or reduced. There were no promises.

    Here.

It's not like it's that big a deal. They're really doing him a favor, considering who is signing classmates are. I mean, do you think Onterio McCalebb would enjoy signing with Richardson and Lacy?
