  • This is certainly mutual benefit, for him he gets CNS stamp of experience on his resume to go along with the fact that he has already been an HC...big things possible to him in the future...congrats to all (and hopefully especially to our existing lineman who will work with him on a daily basis)

What am I missing on Coley as an OC? Worked at FSU where Jimbo calls the plays. He's a good recruiter, something that shouldn't be a problem in Dade and Broward for any UM staff. That said, Alabama has already established some nice ties in So. Florida and bringing Cristobal in will augment the situation. If you're UM, you'd rather work with Cristobal in the area than against him at Alabama. So, no, it's not just a blow to UM's ego. It's real.

What's wrong with hiring an OC that doesn't actually call the plays, especially when they work for an offensive minded HC? Coach Nuss didn't call the plays at Washington, Sark did, and he turned out pretty good, produced the most explosive offense in the Saban era, and had a few players break some records along the way.

Nothing "wrong" with it; just don't know for sure how that guy will respond until he's in that spot. Until it's a guy's job to develop/install the game plan and work beyond the script on game day, it's a bit of mystery.

Overall, Nussmeier's first year at UA was very good but there were times (Texas A&M and first two and half quarters vs. UGA) when even his sanity was questioned. If UA doesn't discover the running game in the third quarter in Atlanta, people's perception of Nussmeier would probably be a good bit different. Comes with the job, no doubt.

Maybe Coley will be the next Homer Smith. He had a decent year as an OC at FIU in 2007 (when he worked for Cristobal, interestingly enough) but he's still largely an unknown as a play caller/OC. His resume is somewhat similar to Nussmeier's, who, in addition to UW, also had OC experience at Fresno and QB coaching experience in the NFL. We'll find out soon enough.

  • Like most successful businessmen, CNS will not hire anyone that wouldn't want his job (or one like it). It's a smart business move to hire someone that is motivated enough to want a top spot. Regardless if it is a year or two, it's part of the process that we all keep seeing.

    TR you are rocking!!
    Great thread great insight!

    snow ski bum

  • TR, thanks for the thread, but by the way, is it not freaking special that Tide fans KNOW A LOT about Mario Cristobal already, have recognized him as a future star in coaching and
are quite familiar with his background, past work, stupid AD at FIU who did not know as much about him as ordinary Tide fans did. Sheesh, no wonder the BamaNation stands
astride the college football world and casts a mighty big shadow. Well, then again Pilgrims, that is how it always should be. Right? Yeah, as I thought you'd say........RTR!
