David Palmer/Tyrone Prothro

  • Which one do you think was better? I know its hard to judge because Prothro didn't have a full career. Also, will there ever be another player like them to play for Bama?

    tidefan86

  • DP but TP was very, very good.

    vaughanlaw

  • Palmer: better runner
    Prothro: better receiver

    dc12

  • Very hard to judge since Pro didn't have a full career, but I'd go with Pro. Duece got himself into trouble way too often. RTR.

  • Had he not gotten hurt, I think TP would have been our first Heisman winner and one of the greatest to ever play at The UoA. Palmer wasn't too shabby though. (VBG) rolltideroll

  • Only 1 of them finished in the top 3 for the Heisman...and only 1 of them would have been a huge favorite for the Heisman if he would have returned his senior year.

I think some forget how great a receiver he was also...overshadowed by being the 'pocket rocket'.

I love Pro...but the Deuce wins this by a mile.

I agree. Pro was dynamic but deuce was a guy opposing teams had to gameplan for.

  • I loved Prothro. He was incredible, and the injury broke my heart. But watching The Deuce play sometimes made me question whether or not he was human. Guy was an absolute freak, and maybe the most fun player to watch that I've ever seen.

The Deuce, and with all respect to Prothro, it's not even close.

    The Coleman Kid

  • Palmer and it's not even close. No disrespect to Prothro.

  • Palmer. He made a name for himself early as a freshman and still spent the next two and a half years showing the country they couldn't stop him. Can't tell you how many coaches lost their job because of David Palmer whether at receiver or as a return man. I watched every play that both Palmer and Prothro were in at UA and although Prothro was very special, Palmer was as electric as the game has ever seen. Can't tell you how many times the whole world knew he was getting the ball and there was nothing they could do to stop him whether it was a much needed first down, a catch in triple coverage, a QB keep around the edge to win the game or a long punt return after being surrounded by 6,7,8 defenders. He is and always will be one of my favorite players to ever wear crimson. The only thing I would change about DP would be forcing him to stay his senior season (VBG).

  • I love that video!!!
Love Prothro, but I have to go DP. He is the man.

  • I mainly asked this because I was too young to really remember watching the deuce. I have only really gotten to see highlights on YouTube.

    ^^This^^

I loved Prothro but DP was an absolute freak. Also, DP was a better receiver than he gets credit for. DP could have played WR, QB, RB, or any secondary position. We haven't had a player like him since. His ability to escape was just special and a pleasure to watch. I never get tired of watching his highlight reel.

  • Palmer. Prothro was great but Palmer was one of the most dynamic players ever.

So much truth in this post. I have a cousin that is a huge Vol fan and he will tell you straight up that every one of them knew Palmer was taking the snap and going around the ends for the 2-point conversion in 1993 but they still couldn't stop it. Just amazing skills that kid had. He was very under appreciated as a WR IMO. We didn't have a solid passing game while he was here or he would have had better numbers although he did put up over 1,000 yards receiving his JR year despite playing some QB due to injuries to Barker. Just think...he was running the wildcat before there was a wildcat.

Truth. Palmer was one of the original Wildcats. Prothro was fantastic. Even more than that, he was special. But Palmer was on his own planet. His ability to just kind of hop in one place, cut, and be gone was unparalleled. There have no doubt been faster players than Deuce, but I'm not sure I've ever seen one who was quicker. And I don't just mean at Alabama.

Palmer and it is not even an argument. He could do anything he wanted any time he wanted. One of my top 5 Bama players of all time.
