  • I'd love to be a fly on the wall for those meetings!

I can just hear the Big Ten meeting... "If we don't lobby for conference champions only, how long will it be before one of our teams plays for the championship?"

  • The only thing I agree with spurrier on is having a committee to select the top 4 teams. A couple of years ago when the plus 1 became a hot topic I mentioned a selection committee to put into place to take away the ap's voting. Leave the other polls in place as a guidance but at the same time let the committee make the final choices. There is no way a sporting show host should have say so to determine who the national champs are because voting is based in such regional terms anyways.

  • Spurrier just makes me shake my head. Saban built LSU and UA. Now that he has won 2 out of 3 he should go somewhere else because winning NCs is just old hat? Really? Spurrier is just pissed after he left UF and crumbled in the NFL no elite program would take him. By Spurrier's reasoning Bobby Bowden was crap, Paterno was a nobody, and the Bear was mediocre.

  • Is it me, or is Spurrier trying to hard to remain the second best coach in the SEC behind Bear?

But there are over 100 voters to give a voice in the voting as it is now. A selection committee would all but guarantee the playoff will expand to 8 teams. The first time they place a 5 or 6 place team over the 4th or 3rd rank team the whole house of cards will fall.

Form a panel of 20 voters with a relatively equal distribution around the country who know the game and let them form a poll, and bring back the AP. Make whoever gets a vote to show their entire ballot weekly. Use a couple computers who will show their formulas to counter any perceived human bias and be done with it. I'll take that over a closed door discussion by a committee who wouldn't have to answer to anybody.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban fired back Tuesday.

“The reason that we're even doing the top four is because the fans and the people who are interested in college football are interested in seeing the best four teams play in a playoff,” Slive said. “So now we're going to mess that up by saying you've got to be conference champion? I think somebody is a little bit self-absorbed and worrying about it affects them and how they can best get somebody in the game all the time rather than getting the best four teams, and I don't think that's fair to the fans and the people that really have made it known they want to see the best four teams in a playoff.”

What did Saban say? There is a quote from Slive but not Saban.

I think when it referred to Slive making that comment it was a misprint. Article yesterday stated that Saban quoted that.

  • I spent 20 years in Big Ten Country ( Columbus, Ohio)........they are all "bigotted" towards the SEC.....and other conferences.......except their conference (of course) and the PAC10/12 ???..........and the Rose Bowl......Jim Delany should just keep his mouth shut...........I don't think they should put the games out for bid........use the exsisting Bowls......just re-schedule so they will meet a four team play-off......thanks, Gentry.......it just keeps getting better in these dog days........RTR

I am sorry but I just do not agree with this method. Way too many "opinions" and not enough factual evidence is taken into account. The BCS formulates mathematically and takes polls into account as Well I think the BCS was "wacked" for dropping strength of schedule in its ranking process. That was seriously a very stupid move. Strength of schedule is INCREDIBLY important to the process. However, committees are always "swayed" by the flash in the pan teams and they leave out the important details like strength of schedule. Take for instance the NBA this year. San Antonio is playing "phenomenal" team ball. But many think they are boring and don't want to watch the games as much. But they win and they beat the fan favorites with the stars on their teams. If it was up to a committee, San Antonio would have to jump through MORE hoops to make it to the top 4 pick for these kinds of reasons. Alabama has traditionally been a POWERFUL football team and not one that is flashy or always pretty. And thus would not necessarily be a fan favorite. The Boise State's would get those votes even though they play in a POWDER PUFF league every year with no real competition barring 1 or 2 games. Not fair to teams who have to rough and tumble for 8 league games in a league where multiple teams in the league "spank" other leagues teams on a regular basis. Strength of schedule is CRITICAL in my opinion. And committees are like "arse" holes and opinions, everyone has one.

    Agree 100%.

“You can't watch everything,” Spurrier said. “Obviously, probably most of us vote for our conference guys and our buddies around the country. The coaches’ vote is probably not as accurate as the media vote, really.

Spurrier needs to stick to coaching and GOLF. Unlike Spurrier, many of the coaches in the SEC work hard in the office throughout the year and I would take their opinion over any "media person's" uneducated opinion any day of the week. The media are honestly just glorified fans. Most of them do not know much more about football than the fans do, barring a few ex-players that have transitioned their careers to the media. Coaches poll should be just as important as any media poll.

    RISINGTIDES

  • The commiss for the Big10 is just a hater. Frustrated that his conference has become an also ran in college football the last 6 years. I used to respect the Big 10 next to the SEC as one of the best conferences and with regards to actual football being played, I still do. But took a step down with his "jealous" comments.

I still think the SEC, BIG10, BIG12, and PAC12 in that order are the premier conferences in football and will not be surprised to see those 4 expand to 16 or 20 teams each and leave the others in the dust.
